Why do we have schools? Social Mobility…..move on up…..stay where you are …or drop down Who in the class is a first generation college student? Academic Achievement= life/social skills Workforce training ( hard and soft skills…what are these?)

Social Development Real world social skills Sand box to student government Cultural Transmission Schools are part of our culture, they reflect the culture of the community ( urban/rural/suburban) Exposer to cultures that are new Cultures coming to North America learn our culture

Cultures in Our Schools Historically WMC…both in instruction and school boards ….slowly changing. WMC values ( again, slowly changing) Culture in our schools via History, Literature, Science, Extracurriculum role modeling of staff

Public vs Private Schools Public Schools account for about 90% of school population, reflect the values of community Private Schools account for about 10% of school population, reflect values of those who choose to attend ( families) Church Schools Catholic? Christian? Quaker? Non-denominational

Church Related Schools Catholic Schools (NYC, Chicago, Philly….with out public schools would be over burdened) Usually Pk-8, HS 9-12 Special education varies voc tech/dual enrollment open bounderies Amish Schools 1-8!
