Student Doctor Research Student Doctor (MS TeamServices©, SD-TS) The Technology and Osteopathic Medicine Association (TOMA) of MSUCOM Student Doctor as an Information Sharing Platform in Medical Education Michael E. Promote the appropriate technology use for: Medical Education Health Care Delivery Communication Liaison within the MSUCOM Statewide Campus System Research Our History: Started 4 years ago as general technology interest group, it now focuses on student education Current Activities: Student Training: Focuses on arming current students, faculty, and physicians with technology training specific to medicine and general computing through student-to- student seminars Maintenance of Student Doctor Website, allowing students and student organizations to share information with each other and the outside community Appearances at MOA Annual Conference (2003, PDA Lectures/Help Sessions), MSUCOM Statewide Campus System PDA summit, & Site-Specific Consultation on PDA use within SCS institutions Research: Studying the students’ use of the Student Doctor page as a complement to the current information resources at MSU-COM Increased involvement with AOAMI Next Steps Insuring Continued Institutional Support Presentation of Research Results to Curriculum Committees Enhance SD-TS use in Unit III/Clerkship settings Re-evaluate current systems at MSU-COM to organize and reduce ‘resource overload.’ Increase Student Input in Hospital Technology Support MICHIGAN STATE U N I V E R S I T Y O S T E O P A T H I C M E D I C I N E Location: www.studentdoctor.com.msu.edu Contents Class Home Pages (2005-2008) Student Contact Information, Course calendars, Social Activities Study Tools Student-made study documents, Course Pack additions Student Organization Information Medical Resources School Events/Announcements Discussion Boards For current courses Base Hospital discussions Incoming student information Motivation: Allows students to electronically share information, dynamically, highlighting the cooperative student culture at MSU-COM Helps to organize the information flow throughout MSU-COM Supplements Course Materials Limitations No official MSU-COM support will limit expansion and integration Student responsibilities limit maintenance & support, thus reliability Without continued student support, SD-TS operation ceases Potential for copyright infringement Qualitative Determine SD-TS’s role in the student experience at MSU-COM as a complement to the following information resources: MSUCOM official website Angel (MSU-operated) Official Course Documents MSU scribe system Methods Use SD-TS internal tracking abilities to examine the following parameters: # Files Shared on SD-TS, per subweb & course # Documents Posted, per subweb & course # Hits, per subweb & course Conduct focus groups with student leaders to discuss: Paper vs. Electronic Methods Study Tools vs. Course documents vs. MSU-COM Scribe system Multiple Methods of Communication and Learning General Impressions of all MSU-COM information systems Impressions from Data: Use of SD-TS is a significant & effective information medium at MSUCOM Especially in Study Documents and Class Website pages Does this imply that these services are lacking from pre-existing MSU-COM information venues? Use per course is variable and intractable using current methods Students rely on SD-TS as an information source, though acknowledge ‘resource overload’ at MSU-COM
