What is Athletic Training Division of sports medicine team Primary focus is on care & prevention of athletic injuries Other roles athletic trainer fills –Nutritionist- Psychologist –Cheerleader- Parent Work as a team member to give high quality level of care FIRST TO SHOW, LAST TO GO

Sports Medicine Team Physician –Team Captain –Make final decision about athlete participation –Coordinates medical team Coach –Has knowledge of sport –Understands importance of prevention –Refers athlete to athletic trainer Athlete –Responsible for carrying out instructions from physician or athletic trainer –Must receive written permission to return to physical activity Certified Athletic Trainer –Specializes in preventing, recognizing, managing, and rehabilitating injuries Parents –Responsible for getting proper treatment for son/daughter –Communication with parents is KEY School Administration –Responsible for making sure athletes safety is first priority Community Health Facilities –Provide services which school may not cover Rehabilitation, drug testing, physician services, event coverage

What it takes to be an Athletic Trainer Knowledge & Skills –First Aid, CPR, & emergency skills –Taping, wrapping, & bracing –Basic computer skills –Education of treatment & rehabilitation of acute and chronic injuries –Education of Anatomy, physiology, strength Training, nutrition, and psychology Characteristics –Time management –Listening skills –Communication skills –Organizational skills –Adaptability –Dependability –Common sense –Ability to set priorities –Good physical health –Sense of humor –Interest in helping others –Interest in sports

Responsibilities of an Athletic Trainer Care & Prevention –Initial evaluation –Immediate care of first aid –Plans & supervises rehabilitation programs –Purchase and organize sports medicine equipment –Skilled in protective taping, padding, and bracing –Provide medical assistance to visiting teams

What Does an ATC DO?? Besides take care of injuries –In Charge of Athletic Training Students (ATS) –Develops emergency procedures –Record Keeping –Works with coaching staff on conditioning

Athletic Training Students Under direct supervision of ATC Works as a first aid provider –Know your responsibilities Not able to authorize athlete return to play after injury Vital part of Sports medicine team –Administering First Aid- Activating EMS –Taping & Bracing- Organizing Paperwork –Daily Record Keeping- Ensure clean facilities –Setup water and first aid on field –Oversee Rehabilitation programs

Record Keeping Valuable tool to prevent injuries Information used to find: –What injuries are occurring the most –If additional protective gear may be required –Can conditioning programs be altered to help prevent injuries Proper record keeping is necessary to protect from legal action

Important Forms Pre-Participation Physical –Must have before participation –Used to find out any previous injuries or illnesses –Must be cleared by a Medical Doctor MD, DO, PA-C Assumption of Risk –Individual assumes risk that can happen during sport –Releases school/organization from liability –Must be signed by athlete and parent (if student is under 18 yrs of age) Emergency Insurance Info & consent –Provides information needed to treat patient properly –Must be filled out and on file before participation

Special Instructions Given by performing Physician Note any special instructions from physical Doctor’s note is final –Athlete can not return to play without note from physician

Physical Conditioning ATC works with coach on program Biggest factor in injury prevention Periodization –Year round training program –Post, off, pre, & in-season programs –Decrease reconditioning and prevent overtraining

How Do I Become an ATC??? Education –Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in athletic training School must be accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) http://www.caate.net/ http://www.caate.net/ –Pass exam given by Board of Certification (BOC) –Certification for emergency Cardiac Care CPR/AED
