You are buying a brand new house, and you really have gotten it for a great deal! There is, however, a slight problem. When the inspector comes out, he notices a very small colony of termites underneath the house. In this initial colony, there are 20 termites. The inspector tells you that when the population of termites is over 2 million the house is basically gone. If the population of termites doubles every 3 days, how long do you have to treat the termite problem?
2
Remember the generalized form of an exponential equation: Y= a * b x a = the “starting point” or y-axis b = the base What is our starting point from the previous slide? What is our rate from the previous slide? How can we account for the 3 days? (Hint: think of how we can change the exponent)
3
y= 20 * 2 (x/3)
4
You are travelling the world and enjoying yourself. One day, however, your plane goes down on a deserted island. Assume that you are a 150 pound person and you lose 12% of your body weight every day you go without food. How long can you stay above 100 pounds?
5
y= 150 * 0.88 x Day 0 =150 Day 1 = 132 Day 2 = 116.2 Day 3 =102.22 Day 4 = 89.95

7
y = 150 *.80 (x/3) Day 0 = 150 Day 1 = 139.25 Day 2 = 129. 27 Day 3 = 120 Day 4 = 111.4 Day 5 = 103.41 Day 6 = 96

Exponents Side-by-side with same base Add the exponents e.g. x 4 x 5 = x 9 Top and Bottom with same base Subtract the exponents e.g. x 5 /x 4 = x Outside of parenthesis Multiply the exponents e.g. (x 4 ) 5 = x 20
9
Negative exponents in the numerator become positive in the denominator. Negative exponents in the denominator become positive in the numerator.
