LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER All Roman soldiers had to carry their own packs. Packs contained a three- day supply of food, clothes, a bedroll, a bucket, saw, digging tools, and stakes.

LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER Soldiers also had to wear full-body armor and carry an iron helmet and all of their weapons, usually a pair of javelins, a sword, and a leather-covered shield.

LIFE OF A ROMAN SOLDIER It was about 90 pounds of weight. Not only that, each legion was expected to march 20 miles a day, then build a fortified camp each night.

ROME’S CONQUEST OF THE ITALIAN PENINSULA The Romans could have abandoned the city, but chose to start over and rebuild By 275 BC, the Romans had completely conquered the Etruscans and the Samnites to completely take over the Italian Peninsula

ROME’S CONQUEST OF THE ITALIAN PENINSULA The Romans achieved major victories but also suffered heavy costs As the territory grew, Rome had to keep a permanent army in all its lands to protect them and enforce its rule More and more plebeians were forced to serve in the army

ROME’S CONQUEST OF THE ITALIAN PENINSULA Rome also allowed some of the defeated tribes it conquered to become Roman citizens, but not all of them were equals Some of them received limited privileges compared to others and Roman allies had to pay taxes to Rome as well as provide for the soldiers
