2 WHY LEARN DEBATING? Because it’s fun! Debating is a way of persuading someone to your point of view. It is about being assertive. It is about considering all aspects about a topic. It’s about convincing others that you are right …. And they are wrong! => This is called persuasive speaking

8 WHEN WOULD YOU EVER NEED TO PERSUADE SOMEONE ??? At a job interview When a policeman is writing you a speeding ticket When you landlord wants to throw you out of your flat because you destroyed it! When you want to return a faulty product to a shop When you want to convince me to give you a sweet!

9 TALK OR DIE THE WORLD IS INFESTED WITH ZOMBIES…. YOU ARE DRIFTING TO A DESERTED ISLAND WHERE YOU CAN BUILD AND CREATE A SAFE NEW LIFE BUT, THE BALLON IS TOO HEAVY AND IS LOSING HEIGHT – YOU ARE AT RISK OF BEING EATEN ALIVE …. UNLESS … ONE IS THROWN OUT! CONVINCE OTHERS WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN THE BALLOON AND WHY ONE OF THE OTHERS SHOULD BE THROWN TO THE ZOMBIES.

11 WHAT DO I DO IF I DISAGREE WITH SOMEONE’S COMMENTS a)Call them a rude name. b)Scream at them. c)Throw a piece of furniture d) Call for a “POINT OF INFORMATION”

12 HOW ? 1.Assume the pose! 2.Say, “Point of Information” 3.Wait until it is either, “Accepted” or “Denied” State your comment Sit Down as a question. Then sit down! They will try to answer your question

13 SESSION TWO LET’S GET SERIOUS GROUPS OF FIVE (5) GIVE YOUR GROUP A TEAM NAME YOUR GROUP WILL DEBATE ANOTHER TEAMS ACROSS A DESK.

14 ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST …. “TEACHERS ARE NOT NEEDED ANYMORE.”

15 TEACHERS ARE NOT NEEDED ANYMORE Agree: (They are outdated) Disagree (They ARE needed)

16 First Speaker: 1.Introduces team 2.Explains what each speaker will talk about 3.Begins with their argument Second Speaker: 1.Rebutt /Challenge anything that the opposition has said. 2.Begin your arguments. Third Speaker: 1. Rebutt/Challenge anything that the opposition has said. 2. Begin argument Fourth Speaker: “Summariser” 1.Recap what each of your speakers said 2.“and that is why we believe that..” Fifth Speaker: Does not speak! 1. Listens and writes and passes rebuttal comments for team to say.

18 THE TOPIC IS: THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS THE DATE YOU DIE … SHOULD THEY TELL YOU? Proposition: (Agree with the topic) = Yes, they should tell you. Opposition: (Disagree with the topic) = No, they should NOT tell you!
