Barriers to Educational Technology & IDT in Developing Worlds Internet Connectivity Lack of resources Overtly Populated Classrooms Training and Professional Development Competence among teachers vary Rote Learning New definition for “technology for education” Didactics- the art of science of teaching Sustainability
5
Example: TORNADO IN A BOTTLE Example of creating new meaning to “technology for education” (Two plastic bottles, tape, and water) (Simple resources transformed into useful tools for learning) Videos and online modules about tornadoes and vortex creation may be unavailable so a teacher could find resources found in their environment to simulate this experience. This is also a type of informal learning strategy.
6
Creative Collaboration! Vera John-Steiner coined creative collaboration (as cited in Visser, 2012 p. 234). COLLABORATION IS TRANSFORMATIVE (BENEFITS) According to a case study of creative collaboration Oppenheimer (2013) states that there are five guidelines for effective collaboration to take place : There is no ONE right answer There is no such things a mistake; as long as learning takes place Learning is not linear Input from a range of sources is important Flexibility is key

IDT in an Asian Context

E-learning Brought IDT to Business The year 2000 marked the beginning of E-learning in Japan (Suzuki and Jung, 2012, p. 240) The “new technique” called E-learning combined computer based instruction, web based instruction, multimedia use, and internet based learning. IDT was seen more as a design element rather than a systematic approach. Businesses felt as though the concept of IDT was the same synonymous with usability design and visual design. ADDIE introduced HRD becomes attractive because of the decline in economy. Before economic collapse, businesses made profits without adequately training its employees Companies were concerned with high productivity HRD was for productivity instead of personal growth for employees
9
IDT in Japanese Schools Government offered basic IT training to teachers in IT enhanced instruction. (This is a good thing because it was mandated that teachers pass a two credit IT basics course. Downside is that the license does not have to be renewed LESSON STUDY (Jugyokenkyu) WAS CREATED TO CIRCUMVENT WEAK IDT PRACTICE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g48DAG4hJd4
10
Korea: IDT in Corporations IDT has been more intensely applied in corporate training in Korea More IDT and HRD specialists are targeted The Employment Insurance Act can be attributed for the success in corporate e-learning (it provided financial support) In order to continue to be funded, an outside organization has to deem the training content effective
11
KOREA: IDT IN SCHOOLS Educational Technology introduced in the 60s with the introduction of audio-visual media. According to Suzuki and Jung (2012), Korean policy was to send young teachers and scholars overseas to take programs in IDT to promote concepts in formal education (p. 244) Unlike Japan, every three years, you are expected to upgrade your technical and pedagogical knowledge of Information and Communications technologies (ICT). SOME CULUTURAL CHALLENGES Many people still believe that instruction is best taught through lecture via face-to-face Little interaction with people or higher order thinking
12
Europe is a melting pot of cultures According to Green (2012) Behaviorism was the foundation of the design of jobs and instruction and school curriculums (p.250) Training models in Europe tend to have the “out with the old mentality” IS ADDIE REALLY DEAD? What do you think? Magic Dust Theories Implemented INTSRUCTIONAL DESIGN IN EUROPE
13
TREND TOWARDS INFANTILISM What comes to mind when you hear the word infantilism?
14
CHALLENGES Rapid e-learning causes credibility gaps Clear standards and qualifications are not set Software System Developers have taken the role of instructional designer instead of IDT specialists Informal Learning is Not Widely Accepted (Strong Teacher-Learner Didactic
