Northern Training Consortium Update Andy Knight

NOTE This is an update – so everyone knows what is going on – rather than seeking approval from the subgroup. Currently speaking with people ‘on the ground’ Will seek approval from the LDG 28 th Feb 2015 Will seek approval from the NE HRD Get signatures from Exec Directors for 1 st April 2016

NTC Update What is the Northern Training Consortium? New Developments Changes to the SoA –How is it expanding? –How is it developing? ATP PTP STP HSST N orthern T raining C onsortium

WHAT IS NTC? Before 2011 –Regional Medical Physics services in NE managed by NuTH –Clinical Scientist and Technologist training coordinated by RMPD After 2011 –Medical Physics divided amongst several Trusts –No coordination of training / coincided with MSC developments –No one Trust able to provide all training necessary for all levels and all specialisms 2013 –Statement of Agreement to formalise training arrangements for Medical Physics Staff –Ensures training overhead is equally distributed and training is consistent across the region N orthern T raining C onsortium

NEW DEVELOPMENTS More information is now available about MSC (compared to 2013) Better understanding how PTP, STP and HSST work More specialism areas to be incorporated

EXPANSION - Specialisms The PTP specialisms that are currently supported by the Northern Training Consortium are: –Medical Physics (Radiotherapy Physics) –Medical Physics (Nuclear Medicine) –Medical Physics (Radiation Physics) –Clinical Engineering (Medical Engineering) –Clinical Engineering (Renal Technology) –Clinical Engineering (Rehabilitation Engineering) –Clinical Engineering (Radiation Engineering) The STP specialisms that are currently supported by the Northern Training Consortium are: –Medical Physics (Radiotherapy Physics) –Medical Physics (Imaging with Ionising Radiation) –Medical Physics (Imaging with Non-Ionising Radiation) –Medical Physics (Radiation Safety) –Clinical Engineering (Device Development) –Clinical Engineering (Rehabilitation Engineering) –Bioinformatics (Physical Science) –Bioinformatics (Health Informatics) –Medical Physics (Clinical Pharmaceutical Science) Now there is a Clinical Engineering PTP course available New area that was not available when Statement of Agreement was written originally

EXPANSION - Employers Currently: –The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust –South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust –City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust –Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust –North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust –Newcastle University New Employers: –Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust –South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust –County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust –North Tees and Hartlepool Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust So the Clinical Engineering PTP programme can be supported.

EXPANSION - Departments Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust –Full Partner - Regional Medical Physics Department –Full Partner - Cancer Services (Radiotherapy Physics) –Full Partner – Radiology –Co-opted Partner - Genetics –Co-opted Partner Estates (Medical Electronics) – to become Full Partner –Full Partner - Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust –Full Partner - Medical Physics Department –Co-opted Partner Estates (Medical Engineering) – to become Full Partner City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust –Full Partner - Medical Physics Department –Co-opted Partner Estates (EBME Department) – to become Full Partner Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust –Full Partner - Medical Physics Department, Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle –Co-opted Partner Estates (Medical Engineering) – to become Full Partner University - Newcastle University –Co-opted Partner - Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust –Full Partner – Estates (Electronics Department) South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust –Full Partner – Estates (Biomedical Engineering ) County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust –Full Partner – Estates (Clinical Engineering Department) North Tees and Hartlepool Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust –Full Partner – Estates (Clinical Engineering)

EXPANSION - Roles Training Coordinator –Dr Alison Mackie Training Officer (PTP) Medical Physics –Susan McGranaghan Training Officer (PTP) Clinical Engineering (Rehabilitation Engineering and Radiation Engineering) –Mike Walker Training Officer (PTP) Clinical Engineering (Medical Engineering & Renal Technology) –To be appointed Training Officer (STP) (All Physical Science Specialisms excluding Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences) –Dr Emma Bowers Training Officer (STP) (Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences) –Dr Alison Beaney Split role ?

DEVELOPING ATP Still awaiting more information from MSC team/National School for Healthcare Science No development with this section…

DEVELOPING PTP (Medical Physics) Applicable to Trusts who employ Medical Physics Practitioners: Recruitment of Medical Physics PTP Trainees organised by NuTH All 4 Trusts responsible for helping select Trainees PTP trainees hold an honorary contract with NuTH NuTH do pre-employment checks as set out in the NHS Employers Employment Check Standards. NuTH to provide a document confirming all checks have been completed to all partners that will host a Medical Physics PTP Trainee Funding (NB university fees paid by HEE) Fulltime course at the University of Swansea The 4 Trusts agree to contribute to a trainee bursary (~£2000 per trainee per annum) Trusts will contribute to the bursary on the basis of: Proportion of total Medical Physics Practitioners (headcount) across Trust x £Annual Bursary The headcount figures based on staff in post, on the 1 April prior to the Trainee starting year 1 on the programme. Contributions will remain the same for the duration of the programme for each individual.

DEVELOPING PTP (Clinical Engineering) Clinical Engineering PTPs are In-Service Trainees only Will use the University of West of England PTP programme The Trusts will: –do pre-employment checks as set out in the NHS Employers Employment Check Standards –provide partners hosting the PTP trainee for any part of their training with a document confirming pre –employment checks have been undertaken

DEVELOPING STP (NTC STP Learning & Development Fund) Applicable to Trusts who employ Physical Science Scientists: Ensure that every final year NTC STP Trainee has the opportunity to present and attend a National Conference. The 4 Trusts agree to contribute to a final year direct entry NTC STP Learning & Development fund (£1000 per final year STP Trainee) Trusts will contribute to the bursary on the basis of: Total number of final year direct entry STP trainees doing a specialism x proportion of Clinical Scientists employed in that specialism x £1000 Expectation that employers of In–Service Trainees provide a £1000 for their final year STP trainees to facilitate equality across the consortium.

DEVELOPING HSST When SoA written there was no information on HSST Have now agreed: –All HSST candidates will be in-service –Northern Training Consortium will: support Trusts in writing HSST business cases organise Mentors for HSST candidates ensure training centre accreditation is gained and maintained with the support of the Partners. –All Trusts will: notify NTC of HSST candidates do pre-employment checks as set out in the NHS Employers Employment Check Standards provide partners who provide very specialist training for any part of their training with a document confirming pre –employment checks have been undertaken

CONCLUSIONS Changes have had to occur due to: –Development of Clinical Engineering PTP programme –Development of Medical Physics PTP programme –NTC wanting to ensure that all final year NTC STP trainees attend a national conference –Confirmation of how the HSST programme works Main impact will be on: –NuTH –Stees –Sunderland –Cumbria/Northumbria Need to find money for: Medical Physics PTP Bursary NTC STP Learning and Development Fund
