1 What’s Happening on the ILC Controls Front at FNAL Margaret Votava Fermilab January 9th, 2006

2 ILC’s and FNAL’s Top Priority Getting a credible cost for construction approval Cavity R&D –Controls and LLRF systems are required for this R&D –Some LLRF R&D is necessary for getting cavity test areas working. –R&D for the Controls system itself is vital, but it can wait. –How much controls R&D is needed/desired to make the test areas work?

3 Funding Issues Despite priorities, ILC has not allocated nearly enough funds for controls support of the cavity testing areas, let alone controls R&D. –Controls is not unique. True for other infrastructure support as well – RF, LLRF, instrumentation, etc. –This is recognized by FNAL and is being ignored at the moment. (at least for FTE) FNAL SCRF proposal going for DOE funding in February –Approval is critical for NML. Schedules are a mess and completely unreliable, but will improve

4 Where are the Controls Efforts Now Global Effort –WBS exercises and writing RDR, R&D project plans, etc –ANL, FNAL, a little SLAC and sometimes DESY and KEK (but mostly for LLRF) –Necessary, but dull Test Area Effort –Vertical Test Stand(s) at IB1 –Horizontal Test Stand at MDB –Super conduction RF test area at NML Cryomodule testing here Will have beam –SLAC and ANL want to be involved at a 0.5 FTE level

5 Global Controls Effort Costing and RDR writing for GDE ~ 1.5 FTE. Enough to go to the weekly meetings. –Jim, Sharon, Brian, Margaret, Vince, Ron, Steve Wolbers, Bakul Have an R&D project plan, but very limited funding to work on any of it through FY08. –High availability – both hardware and software. Charlie’s work in ATCA falls in here. –Phase reference distribution –Controls system architecture, including gap analysis Delays probably ok, but there are many things that we could be integrating in at NML from the get go. –Maybe we still can with NML delays .

6 Test Area Effort We are looking for 11.5 FTEs just for base support of test areas (ie, no R&D) –3.5 for common infrastructure support – EPICS/DOOCS base support, configuration management, system admin, CRL support, etc –0.5 Development for new instrumentation –2.5 Data Management –3.0 Software development for SCRF –2.0 Hardware development for SCRF –2.0 Cavity Data Management –0.5 HTS support / 0.25 VTS support Combination of all divisions. Primarily (data management not listed) –CD – Margaret, Ron, Luciano –AD – Mike, Dennis, Sharon, Peter P, Michele –PPD – Vladimir, Geoff Short of needed effort

7 NML SCRF facility for ILC and Accelerator R&D –Quite large - on the scale of TTF –https://docdb.fnal.gov/ILC-private/DocDB/ShowDocument?docid=363https://docdb.fnal.gov/ILC-private/DocDB/ShowDocument?docid=363 –Ultimately 3 cyromodules, but building needs to be extended to fit third. –Much of photoinjector will move. New RF gun? Building is empty now –Cryo being installed – Epics based –Network switch added –Controls requirements document being drafted https://docdb.fnal.gov/ILC- private/DocDB/ShowDocument?docid=325 difficult to get input from stakeholders We are on ground floor here – exciting time to be involved –This is a laboratory effort (cross divisional) and hopefully even multilab. –Establishes the collaboration for ILC

8 NML View (Except Beamline Areas)

9 Controls System Knowns Integrated DOOCS/Epics –Many components have interfaces in one or the other, but not both –SCRF is advertised as an international facility for people to test. Need to support the DESY collaboration. –Labview and MATLAB will have end users as well ATCA Test Platform for BPMs –Instrumentation expecting controls to provide the infrastructure

10 Short term deliverables (2007) First Cryomodule delivered summer –Coupler conditioning –Warm testing –Archiving, alarming, control, interfaced to data management Photocathode prep system delivered in fall –Developed at INFN Milano –Labview based –Interface to archiving, alarming.

11 Development Work to Support Facility DOOCS/EPICS interface –Soft IOC exists at DESY built against very old versions of both IOC support for new devices Interlock/modulator upgrade Retire SPARC boards (almost done?) Control interface for cathode prep system Sequencer support for NML processes Alarming/archiving design Operator Interfaces!!!! Clock and timing (need a workshop on this) Diagnostics

12 R&D Plans Facilitate Remote Control –Evaluate/integrate role based access (RBA) –Conflict Avoidance –Remote resets Development environment –Java application support? –Eclipse environment? Scalability –Configuration databases (eg, IRMIS) High Availability –ATCA –Diagnostic Interface Layer (DIL) –Middleware
