About Mathijs Koenraadt Entrepreneur, programmer, writer Interested in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology since 2013 Want to spread the idea of open source & decentralized technologies

This Presentation Idea: “Creative Patents” for Collaborative Innovation Background I: The Open Source Everything Manifesto (Technology) Background II: Decentralize Everything (People) Shifting Paradigms I: Patent Law Shifting Paradigms II: Bitcoin 3.0—Blockchains for Collaboration Sharing, not Secrecy: Market Benefits The Role of CreativePatents.org FAQ

Idea: “Creative Patents” for Collaborative Innovation [1/2] What happens if a medical company invents a cure for cancer? Should they patent it, hide it until they can afford lawyers to protect royalties? Waste money on courts battles trying to stop other companies from doing the same Or worse: new innovations commercially ignored if not patentable? Elon Musk / Tesla: open sourced several patents in 2014; “We believe that […] the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform.” Military State Corp Univ

Idea: “Creative Patents” for Collaborative Innovation [2/2] Abandon closed silos + secrecy, in favor of sharing & collaboration How to share technology patents? Accumulate, vet & improve inventions & ‘blueprints’ in a decentralized library. Idea: combine Thingiverse+GitHub+Wikipedia style UI with decentralized blockchain database. Where is the GitHub for making concrete? Medicine? More efficient airplane engines? Military State Corp Univ

Background I: The Open Source Everything Manifesto (Technology) [1/2] Famous book by Robert David Steele, former CIA 95% of important information is open, only 5% is secret “Power was centralized in the hands of increasingly specialized 'elites' and 'experts' who […] used secrecy and the control of information to deceive the public into allowing them to retain power over community resources that they ultimately looted.” “Human beings, who had spent centuries evolving away from slavery, were re-commoditized by the Industrial Era.”

Background I: The Open Source Everything Manifesto (Technology) [2/2] “Sharing, not secrecy, is the means by which […] create infinite wealth.” (We can own things, but ideas should be free.)

Background II: Decentralize Everything (People) Wrote an article about ‘Decentralize Everything’ & presented at Bitcoin meetup Point: using Bitcoin blockchain technology, or similar, to rewind centralization / centralized ownership of resources & people’s productivity For example, in 2013 Apple paid 76% ($37B) of its profits to shareholders, while more than 50,000 hardworking employees scrambled for a piece of the remaining 24% ($9B), including the CEO and the board of directors. The same distribution is true for Exxon Mobil or Microsoft. Can bottom-up decentralization help break out of this system?

Shifting Paradigm: Patent Law “Modern patent law offers a temporary monopoly to reward innovative effort.”— but does it accelerate innovation? As a web developer: why patent code? (Not possible in EU) Amazon 1-click button…. Problem: patent aggregators (trolls) extort for money. Also: inefficient/waste in court, e.g. Apple-Samsung (supplies iPhone CPUs). Consumer loses. “The legal system must shut down markets when the things being exchanged have no social value.”—maybe not legal system, but decentralized tech. Recommended reading: Tim Nicholas: “Are Patents Creative or Destructive? — Working Paper.”Harvard Business School. 2013

Shifting Paradigms: Bitcoin 3.0— Blockchains for Collaboration [1/2] Other projects: OpenPatents.org, Patentleft—focus on the license, to make technology public (good step forward) “Creative Patents”—not just a license, but a decentralized patent library with a UI, e.g. stored on a blockchain (or similar). Thingiverse + GitHub / Wikipedia for technology?

Shifting Paradigms: Bitcoin 3.0— Blockchains for Collaboration [2/2] Old paradigm: inventors at universities, militaries, even nations, corporate innovation centers can cooperate with individuals, but not with each other. Closed silos -> espionage New paradigm: a technology ‘commons’ to which inventors public distribute their ideas. Invite crowd for collaboration. Snowball effect: once it starts rolling, this patent library becomes increasingly useful, valuable.

Sharing, not Secrecy: Market Benefits Why would commercial companies adopt decentralized patent aggregator libraries? Natural selection. Adopt it, or go bankrupt. (Small business + using Creative Patents library) > Corporate without ? Access to billions of minds (“the 99%”) continuously solving problems, sharing their solutions. Faster time-to-market, less funds wasted on R&D. Consumer wins.

The Role of CreativePatents.org Serves as public User Interface Hosting a “Kickstarter for problems”. Reverse Kickstarter: crowd pitches/votes for problems, inventors cooperate to solve ‘most popular problems’
