SICKLE CELL BY: LOGAN STARR, EVAN MCCRAY, MORGAN PRATT, ANGELA VILLEGAS

TYPE OF GENETIC DISORDER Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin-beta gene found on chromosome 11. Hemoglobin transports oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body. Red blood cells with normal hemoglobin (hemoglobin-A) are smooth and round and glide through the blood cells. Sickle cell disease is inherited. Two genes for the sickle cell hemoglobin must be inherited from ones parents in order to have the disease. A person who receives a gene for sickle cell disease from one parent and a normal gene from the order has a condition called sickle cell trait.

SYMPTOMS OF DISORDER Pain in joints Sudden pain in chest Dizziness Blood in urine Inflamed fingers and toes * All of these symptoms are caused by damaged cells clumping together and sticking to the walls of the blood vessels blocking blood flow to certain areas of the body.
5
EFFECTS OF DISORDER THE EFFECTS ARE - Lack of oxygen - Anemia - Hypoxemia the cells aren’t in there regular circle shape so it causes the blood flow to slowdown / if not it will stop and cause lack of oxygen.
6
DIAGNOSIS OF INDIVIDUAL WITH DISORDER Doctors can diagnose people with sickle cell by a blood test. This blood test is done in newborn’s and in adults. In adults the blood is draw from a vein in there arm in newborn’s it is drawn from a finger or heel.
7
AJ GREEN SICKLE CELL STORY When AJ was born in 1992, there was lack of information about the newborn sickle cell disease. They only told him that he was going to have a PKU shot. After the PKU shot the doctor called with some result and found out that he had a sickle cell disease. AJ had his first sickle cell disease crisis at 8 mouths.
8
TREATMENTS AVAILABLE TO INDIVIDUAL WITH DISORDER Bone marrow transplant offers the only potential care, but finding a downer is difficult. The procedure has a risk of death.
9
CURRENT RESEARCH We have been learning about sickle cell for the past decade or so and we now know how to treat certain conditions and symptoms for sickle cell. People with sickle cell are now living to be 40-50 years old or more.
10
2 ND GRAPHIC RELATED TO THE DISORDER The 2 nd graphic related to sickle cell disease is Thalassemia which is a blood disorder involving less than normal amounts of oxygen carrying protein in the body.

SUMMARY My little brother had sickle cell when he was younger he didn’t let it affect him to much socially but it did affect him physically. It looked like he was always out of breath. When he had it was hard to play a game of tag with him for very long. He didn’t let that show he just kept trying and fighting with it and it was finally gone but it didn’t seem to affect him very much.
