ADOLESCENCE to Adulthood
Adolescence – the period of time between puberty and full maturation (adulthood) Puberty – the period of human development during which people become able to reproduce children Hormones – the chemical substances made and released in one part of the body that cause changes in other parts of the body. Males = testosterone (made in the testes) Females = estrogen and progesterone (made in the ovaries)

Physical Changes In Males
Most men start puberty between the ages of 10-16 First change is increased testicle size, which is the reproductive structure that makes sperm and testosterone

Physical Changes in Women
Most women start puberty between ages of 8-14 Menstruation begins usually around the age of 12, followed by hips widening and fat deposited at the hip bones Menstruation begins as well

Changes for both Males and Females
Growth spurts Women usually hit spurts first making them taller than most boys, but boys develop larger muscles and stronger bones through puberty Facial Acne Change in muscle strength Rise in sex hormones

Desire for Independence
Teens want to be independent, but this feeling can become somewhat confusing, frustrating, and overwhelming “you just don’t understand!” “All my friends get to stay out as late as they want, I’m the only one with a curfew!” I’m old enough to have a job, why should I still have to do work around the house!” PARENTS UNDERSTAND THEY WERE THERE TOO ONCE!!

Expectations/Relationships/Responsibilities
As you mature people will expect more from you, some things are negotiable and some things are not, you must come through on those expectations. Teens look at friend relationships more important than parents and family at times, be aware that this can hurt parents, parents will be the people that should be able to help you most achieve those priorities Show more responsibility and independence will take care of itself. Take responsibility for your actions, and words. Show adults that you are maturing and can handle that desire for independence.

A New Way of Thinking During Early Adolescence (11-13)
Situations are usually seen from one side without considering the others person’s point of view During Middle Adolescence(13-18) Teens feel that nothing bad will ever happen to them. They feel as if they are invincible During Late Adolescence (18+) Teens learn to think more sophisticated and complex manner, they reason a little better, they understand consequences, and they also see other peoples perspectives. Kids go from simple and closed to complex and open!

SOCIAL CHANGES How teens interact with others is an important part of teen years. Social changes refer to those changes which occur within the relationships in a teens life Mom and Dad Adults and others have Friends to begin to respond Bosses differently to an Significant others adolescent because a new person is evolving!

Mental and Emotional Changes
These are changes that are not seen so it may be hard to detect. Teens that express themselves ASSERITVELY are more likely to get things accomplished. Mental changes occur with the thinking process, due to the brain still developing. Emotional changes occur as teens learn to cope with all of the changes that occur during adolescence.

A New Way of Feeling Emotional changes are the toughest.
New feelings arise not only from changes in thinking but also from differences in the way teens see themselves (self-concept) New feelings also come when adolescence are treated differently by others, parents and friends. These feeling can cause adolescence to feel insecure, alone, and confused

Young Adulthood (21 – 35) Physical changes Growth rate slows down
Enter a time of peak physical health (playing sports, taking part in physical activity) Mental and Emotional Changes Now adults look to what is called settling (real job, family) Time now to enjoy independence but still develop relationships Young adults start to relate to their parents on an adult level

Young Adulthood Cont Social Changes Financial Concerns
Potential step of marriage, or single, or what? Many conflicting opinions (what do you think?) Financial Concerns Start to work towards your dream job 23 years old, facebook guy, net worth 1.9 billion This is the period that you might be on your own, earning and spending on your own be careful!!

Middle Adulthood (35-60) Physical Changes
Body starts to slow down, but with good education to diet, exercise and maintain health life can be maintained quite well. Women hit “MENOPAUSE” the period of time in a woman’s life when the woman stops ovulating and menstruating. Men begin to also have a decreased production of sperm and testosterone.

Middle Adulthood Cont. Financial Concerns Mental and Emotional Changes
They accept mortality as they see close friend and loved one pass They begin to evaluate their lives Some may hit a mid-life crisis – the sense of uncertainty about one’s identity and values Social Changes They are more focused on their family and their job in a very positive way, building for their futures. They help other family members get through things that they had to go through as well. Financial Concerns They not only have to make for themselves but they may be supporting others. The more financial burden sometimes leads to more stress.

Older Adulthood (65+) This age group has grown rapidly over the past decade. Physical Changes Recovery from illness and injury becomes difficult, years of unhealthy habits as adolescents begins to catch up with them Mental and Emotional Changes Most adults are more emotionally stable due to increased maturity Many come in terms with the meaning of life! Alzheimer’s Disease – is a disease in which one gradually loses mental capacities and the ability to carry out daily activities Social Changes Retirement (Florida, Arizona, Golf Course, Card Games, Drinking meals from a straw!!) Financial Concerns Working less and looking to retire!
