Thermal Energy Vocab By Levi Collins
2
Section One Temperature- the temp. the average kinetic energy of the particles in the object. Thermal Energy-sum of the kinetic and potential energy of the particles in an object Heat-Thermal energy that flows from a warmer object to a cooler object Specific Heat-Amount of thermal energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of material to 1C
3
Section Two Conduction- The transfer of thermal energy through the particles in matter Convection- The transfer of thermal energy in a fluid by the movement of warmer and cooler fluid from place to place Radiation- The transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves Insulator-material in which heat moves slow
4
Section Three Solar Collector- Absorb radiant energy from the sun Thermodynamics-The study of the relationship between thermal energy, heat, and work First Law of Thermodynamics-The increase in thermal energy of a system equals the work done on the system plus the heat transferred to the system Second Law of Thermodynamics-It is impossible for heat to flow from a cool to a warm object unless work is done Heat Engine- Device that converts heat into work Internal Combustion Engine-The heat engine in a car where fuel is burned inside the engine in the chambers or cylinders
