5/10/2016 In Question: Explain the difference between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. (Review from Q3) Explain the difference between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. (Review from Q3) NB P. 96
3
Heat & Heat Transfer Add to NB P. 97
4
Heat!
5
Measure of average kinetic energy of molecules
6
Also known as thermal energy Always moves from warmer to cooler objects. The result of molecules vibrating quickly Is the total energy of particles in the material
7
This total includes both kinetic and potential energy. Kinetic refers to motion/vibrations Potential refers to stored energy. The more mass a material has at the same temperature the more thermal energy it has.
8
Expansion and Contraction Addition of heat causes substances to expand. Removal of heat (cooling) causes objects to contract.
9
How does Heat get transferred from one thing to another?
10
Heat Transfer Table Type of Heat Transfer DefinitionTransfer Medium ExamplePicture or Symbol Conduction Convection Radiation
11
The transfer of heat by direct contact between objects or particles.
12
Conduction Transfer Mediums Solids Liquids Gases
13
Conduction Examples Solid= Eggs frying in a pan –Eggs are touching the pan & the pan is touching the heat source Liquid= Hot H 2 O + Cold H 2 O = Warm H 2 O –The hot H 2 O molecules touch the cold H 2 O molecules and make them warm Gas= Steam heats the air –The steam released touches the air molecules and heats them up
14
Heat Transfer through movement of molecules within a substance, from warmer to cooler, in convection currents.
15
Convection Transfer Medium Liquids Gases
16
Convection Examples Warming of a pool Warming of a room Warming of the Earth Warming of a body of water…river, lake, ocean, etc.
17
Heat transferred through space. Heat transferred by Electromagnetic Waves
18
Radiation Transfer Mediums Empty Space Air (gases) **Radiation does not require matter to transfer thermal energy
19
Radiation Examples Heat radiating from the sun The sun’s rays causing a sunburn. Heat radiating from a fire
20
Conductors are materials that transfer heat easily. Examples: metals like copper and gold
21
An insulator is a material that does not transfer heat easily. Examples: liquids and gases A jacket

White Boarding Time!
23
How does a lightbulb transfer energy?
24
When water is heated: cold water sinks and hot water rises to the top, this is an example of?
25
Male Penguins keep themselves (and their egg) warm through the winter by huddling together. What type of heat transfer are they using to keep warm?
26
When you use a microwave oven to increase the temperature of a cup of hot chocolate, which type of heat transfer is taking place? A. conduction B. convection C. insulation D. radiation
27
Correct the statement below: Insulators are good at transferring heat.
28
What type of heat transfer do lava lamps use?
29
Which of the following is NOT a good conductor of heat? A.Copper B.Aluminum C.Glass D.Steel
