ASTeC Goal Enable world leading scientific research Develop existing and future accelerator facilities for high-energy physics colliders and intense particle beams, along with next-generation neutron and photon facilities. Engage with both the UK academic community and leading international partners via European Framework programmes and MoUs. Maximise our impact (Industry and Grand Challenge areas) Driven by, the strategic plans and priorities of STFC and other appropriate UK research councils Core accelerator R&D capabilities, complementing national facilities expertise

VELA Facility Capital Investment Development and testing of novel and compact accelerator technologies. Partnership with industry and the scientific community. Applications in medicine, health, security, energy, industrial processing and science. Potential to revolutionise the cost, compactness and efficiency of such systems. High performance and flexible electron beam injector facility feeding customised state-of-the-art testing enclosures and associated support infrastructure. VELA Approval – August 2011 VELA Civil Work Complete – April 2012 VELA hardware commissioning starts – Sept 2012 First electrons from photoinjector – April 2013 £2.5 M BIS Capital

FEL R&D Goals “The accelerator and FEL community has generated a number of FEL R&D goals” –Gun development –RF Issues –Electron Beam Transport Simulation and Optimization –FEL Output Simulation and Optimization –Electron & Photon Diagnostics –Synchronisation ASTeC is contributing in all areas and is nationally leading in most areas through CLARA and other FEL activities 70% of ASTeC staff effort is directed to FEL research and electron beam test facility operation and development
