An Opportunity With dean vacancies and FLC moving into strategic planning we have an opportunity to: Consider a strategic direction that organizes FLC academics around a new or modified vision Shape an external view of FLC that capitalizes on our strengths Give a greater voice to a diverse faculty while strengthening our partnership with the administration

Our Current Situation: Schools School of Arts and Sciences: 85% of the faculty / 80% of the students School of Business Administration: 10% of the faculty / 16% of the students Teacher Ed 5% of the faculty / 4% of the students Early stages of search for two academic deans Desire to minimize/maintain administrative structure (i.e. two Dean structure) Preamble: We assembled # of faculty and students using enrollment numbers by major and phone book by department. There are approximations along the way.

3. Existing Challenges There is little synergy between the Arts and Sciences disciplines Humanities and the Liberal Arts centric departments need more visibility than the current structure offers Where Liberal Arts is a cornerstone of Fort Lewis College our current organizational structure doesn’t promote that identity Current climate suggests the State Legislature, Colorado citizens, and Four corners region expects FLC to satisfy workforce demands especially in: Science and Engineering Business

Capitalize and expand on FLC Strengths Possibilities: Liberal Arts A broad-based foundational education Majors with depth in the Liberal Arts A focus on critical thinking and cultural diversity Professional Programs Demonstrate to the region and state that FLC creates graduates ready for the workforce Capitalize on high demand workforce skills Science, Engineering, and Math Synergy amongst the sciences Culture based in similar types of research Theory and Experimental Driven Business and the Humanities A broad based foundational education A focus on critical thinking and cultural diversity 12

Create a strategic direction focused on the Liberal Arts and Professional Programs resulting in two new Schools School of Professional Programs: (~51% of faculty / ~2400 majors) Preparing graduates for employment is important Satisfies workforce needs in the region Leverages a core strength of FLC Complement of Liberal Arts & professional degree is compelling to potential students and potential employers Initial Conversations with the Chairs indicated most didn’t like the school names and especially “School of Professional Programs”. 1 School of Liberal Arts: (~49% of faculty / ~1400 majors) Provides identity and emphasis to FLC core value Synergy amongst disciplines and Departments External message: The liberal arts: a FLC guiding principle highly valued strengthens all majors

School of Business and the Humanities and the School of Science, Engineering, and Math School of Business and the Humanities: (~49% of faculty / ~1900 majors) Provides identity and emphasis to FLC core value Synergy amongst disciplines and Departments External message: Business and the Humanities are a priority for FLC School of Science, Engineering, and Math : (~51% of faculty / ~1900 majors) Provides identity and emphasis to FLC core value Synergy amongst disciplines and Departments External message: Science, Math, and Technology is a priority for FLC Graduates in STEM are ready to enter the science and engineering workforce Called STEM initially but later realized the “T” wasn’t relevant to FLC. Chairs seemed to like this better but proposed Option 2b as well 2
