Objectives What is the definition of an Orthodontist? What are the requirements to become an Orthodontist? What is the purpose of braces? Different types of braces?

What is the definition of an Orthodontist? Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with the treatment and prevention of irregularities if the teeth and jaws.

Requirements Earn a four-year undergraduate degree, typically a Bachelor’s degree of Science. Take the Dental Acceptance Test, DAT and score high! Get accepted into Dental School. Complete four years of Dental School. After completing Dental School, you must enter an Orthodontic specialty program that typically takes two years to complete, sometimes longer.

Purpose of Braces Straighten overlapping or crooked teeth. To correct Malocclusion ( two parts of the jaw do not line up correctly). Example: Overbite ( the upper jaw is bigger than lower jaw) or underbite ( lower jaw bigger than upper jaw).

Different Types of Braces Metal Braces Ceramic Braces Lingual Braces

Metal Braces Most commonly used. Strong and durable Made out of nickel titanium and stainless steel.

Ceramic Braces Blends with the color of the teeth. Not as strong and durable as the metal braces. Risk of breakage.

Lingual Braces Fits behind the teeth. Are mounted onto the back of the teeth. More expensive. Can be uncomfortable.
