People with disabilities in Hungary 12.07.2012.Balogh Zsófia3 5,7% of the Hungarian population 577 000 people 44%- physical, 14%- blind or virtually impaired, 11%- difficulties in hearing, 10%-mental disability Usually they live in smaller cities in poor regions Education level below the average, studying in special schools, sheltered workshops Necessary physical conditions are not assured 80% of them become inactive job seeker People with disabilities in Hungary People with disabilities in Hungary face social exclusion

Important bottom-up entreprenerial solution for human development Social enterpise - to further a social purpose in a financially sustainable way - to apply business principles and practices to achieve social good - to reinvest their financial returns into the community to further their social purpose: to create employment and/or other economic and social benefits for marginalized communities - for-profit or non-profit (NESsT)

It took 2 years to establish the framework and build contacts and get financial support to start the enterprise in 2010 Since then increasing sales, but still not independent financially yet. CEO of Fruit of care : designer with previous working experiences with sheltered workshops (coming from the civil sector) Lack of abilities in sheltered workshops to develop a business plan, to find the right distribution channels and to develop competitive goods He started to get to know the basic principles of business – trainings Coming from civil society with no business knowledge

People with disabilities in Hungary 12.07.2012.Balogh Zsófia13 Partners – NESsT Facilitating social enterprises - Providing business training, mentoring -Improving management capacity and access to market - Providing grants through different competitions -The aim is to reach financial independency and make the enterprise sustainable For social enterprise the financial support is not enough, but capacity building, training and mentoring are necessary too. People with disabilities in Hungary 12.07.2012.Balogh Zsófia14 Conclusions 1, Social enterprises can play an important role in involving people with disabilities to the labor market. 2, They have to learn how to handle the lack of business knowledge of the civil partners. 5, To reach sustainable human development economic independency is crucial. 4, Social enterprises on the way to sustainability need the financial support but also capacity building, training and mentoring. 3, They must learn the rules of the market and the businnes way of thinking. Some food for thought to take away according to the case study
