Background on the 787-9 Dreamliner Was scheduled to enter service in May 2008 but ended up having its first flight on December 15th 2009. First of its kind to use composite materials throughout construction and proposed to be the most fuel-efficient airliner in the world. The '787' model was originally called '7E7' and the E was said to stand for various economical pointers, such as “efficiency” or “environmentally friendly” (Wikipedia. 2008) The 787 consumes 20% less fuel than the similarly-sized Boeing 767. Features include a four-panel windshield, noise-reducing chevrons on its engine nacelles, and a smoother contour regarding its nose.

Design and Materials – Comparison The 787-9 will be the first variant of the 787 with a "stretched" or lengthened fuselage, seating 250–290 in three classes compared to the 787-8 only holding 210-250. This upgraded model differs from the 787-8 in several ways, including structural strengthening, a higher fuel capacity, but with the same wingspan as the 787-8. 787-9 Dreamliner's airframe features light-weight materials including: (Boeing Commercial Airplanes. 2008) 50% Composite 20% Aluminum 15% Titanium 10% Steel 5% Other

Sustainability and the Environment To make Boeing stand out from other airliners, they are really homing in on being sustainable and thinking about the future. They have recently started a wide-spread project on using bio fuels instead of fossil fuels. Biofuels are primarily derived from corn and soybeans at present. Corn and soybeans are staple food crops and require large amounts of land and resources. This makes them unsustainable sources for biofuel. Sustainable biofuels don't compete with food sources: they require minimal land, water and energy to product and they provide economic value to the communities where they're grown. Avaiation biofuel presents an effective solution to reducing the growth of carbon dioxide emissions. Ideally it presents an almost closed loop system. Plants and algae absorb atmospheric CO2. Later the biomass is harvested and sent to a biofuel refinery where it is processed into aviation fuel. The resulting fuel meets or exceeds the requirement for jet fuel. (New Airplane. 2008) This graph shows the rise in CO2 for aviation. As you can see from the graph, it has drastically got worse in latest years. For this reason, Boeing and other aircraft companies are starting to think more environmentally friendly.

787-9 Dreamliner Compared to other aircraft This variant differs from the 787-8 in several ways, including structural strengthening, a lengthened fuselage, a higher fuel capacity, a higher maximum take-off weight, but with the same wingspan as the 787-8. The main improvements that will attract customers and make Boeing more revenue than the Airbus are; Improved and expanded monitoring, advanced onboard maintenance systems, and e-enabling technologies make real-time ground based monitoring possible. Because the features and design concepts of the Dreamliner are so futuristic and luxury, "Boeing has achieved above projected orders for its 787-9 Dreamliner, outselling the rival Airbus A350." Structural comparison to the Airbus A350 The major changes such as use of composites and the elimination of pneumatic systems, the 787-9 takes advantage of new technologies to increase reliability and improve maintainability. Boeing has looked for opportunities large and small to reduce maintenance costs while making the 787-9 highly available for revenue service. By designing the 787-9 with special features and outstanding performance that reduce costs and increase airplane availability, the Dreamliner 787-9 promises to offer Boeing customers significant savings and greater revenue. "In addition to longer intervals between scheduled maintenance checks, the 787-9 program projects labour hours content will be reduced by 20 percent on a per-check basis and total scheduled labour hours will be reduced by 60 percent over the life of the airplane. This reduction in required scheduled maintenance is another significant contributor to the overall 30 percent airframe and systems maintenance cost reduction guaranteed by the 787-9.

What makes the 787-9 Dreamliner so special? Features of 787-9 Dreamliner Interior mockup photo showing windows and LED mood lighting options for the 787 Dreamliner. Main changes that affect the passengers: Each row of seats has windows like any other aeroplane but Dreamliner 787-9's windows are much larger, technically making every seat a window seat. Even though the cabin crew are in control of cabin lighting, passengers can individually adjust their environment. The overhead bins are also enhanced and a lot bigger and each passenger has ample room. Passengers on board that suffer from motion sickness also experience technology in the 787-9 called "Smoother Ride Technology” that senses turbulence and counteracts it.

The 787-9 replaced virtually all cabin, flight deck and exterior lighting with HID (High- Intensity Discharge) and LED (Light emitting diode) lighting technologies. Because these light types have no filament, the operational life of the lights is dramatically longer than that of an incandescent bulb.
