FUTURE STRATEGY Contributing towards the resolution of global issues Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) is promoting the globalization and competitiveness of Japanese universities. Our Future Strategy has been selected as one of MEXT's Top Global University Projects, and for a 10-year period starting from 2014, it began receiving government sponsorship. 13 Japanese Universities are adopted as Type A Universal Campus initiative Our Future Strategy, named “The Hokkaido Universal Campus Initiative (HUCI)” is a core implementation tactic in the area of university internationalization for the Future Strategy. Through HUCI, Hokkaido University will reform the concept of the university campus and develop into a university that is open to the world.

Investigating the mechanisms of viral and bacterial infections and how to rapidly diagnose them, as well as developing new treatments for them. Aiming to serve as a National Center for the Arctic Research, and to contribute to policy making about the Arctic. Japan’s pioneer of internationalism LEARN FROM NITOBE His Spiritual Nature and Actions NITOBE College is a minor program started in 2013 to educate undergraduate students to become the next generation of global leaders. “I wish to be a bridge across the Pacific Ocean.” Nitobe Memorial Garden (Vancouver, British Columbia) Offers a multidisciplinary educational curriculum designed for : Maximum of 200 students from all 12 faculties of Hokkaido University. Requirement of the college is : Students complete study abroad program. Then, earn the designated 15 credits & receive a certificate of completion. Inazo Nitobe (1862-1933) is best known as the author of Bushido: the Soul of Japan, in which he introduced Japan’s spiritual and moral precepts and practices to the world. From the age of 21, Nitobe was driven by an ambition “to become a bridge across the Pacific.” His deep spirituality and forceful actions epitomize the educational philosophy of Hokkaido University.
