What is IB DP?

Uplift Mission Uplift Education’s mission is to create and sustain public schools of excellence that empower students to reach their highest potential in college and the global marketplace and that inspire in students a life- long love of learning, achievement, and service in order to positively change their world.

Objectives By the end of today’s presentation, you will be able to articulate:  The requirements of the IB DP  Why the IB DP is an inclusive program  What colleges think of the IB DP  How the IB DP prepares students for college

What is the IB Diploma Program?

What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma?  Pre-university diploma (in addition to HS Diploma)  Utilizes international standards  Based on an integrated curriculum  Cultivates student international mindedness

What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma? *Over 3,697 IB authorized schools in 147 countries* *220 IB continuum schools in world, 30 in North America* *0.6% of Texas students take IB exams + * Source IB Website, www.ibo.org, Referenced 15 Jan 2014www.ibo.org + Source TEA Report on AP & IB Exam results, 2010-2011

The IB Diploma Is NOT a replacement for the HS Diploma.  Grades in Uplift HS DP classes are not based upon grades on IB exams (though Uplift HS grades should correlate with student preparedness for IB exams).  It is possible to get the HS Diploma from the state of Texas but not the IB Diploma

AP vs. DP

Both AP & DP  Offer courses widely accepted for college credit.  Provide educational rigor and quality that helps prepare students for college.  Are assessed externally, AP by the College Board, DP by the International Baccalaureate Organization.

AP differs from DP  AP offers a “cafeteria plan” for which students can choose to take one AP course, several, or none.  AP results are based upon a single assessment.  AP is focused towards the educational system of the United States.

DP differs from AP  DP is based upon multiple assessments, both Internal and External.  Independent student choice is often a feature of the assessments, to a greater degree than on AP assessments.  Assessments reflect those typically used in colleges to a greater degree than AP assessments.

Assessment varies across the disciplines Language –Individual oral presentation –Written task History –Research paper Experimental Sciences –Experiment designed by student Visual Arts –Research workbook

IB DP Course Requirements

IB CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK

The “Core” Theory of Knowledge (ToK) Humanities Extended Essay (EE) 4000 word collegiate level argumentative research paper CAS (Creativity Activity Service) More than Community Service

Theory of Knowledge Epistemology class How do you know what you know? We discuss questions like: Who owns knowledge? How is art an expression of truth? How might language used in polls and questionnaires influence the conclusions reached? To what extent is scientific knowledge affected by the social context in which it is written? Is the concept of property an ethical idea? Is the concept of society an ethical idea? What role do beauty and elegance play in mathematical solutions? Everything is connected…all you have to do is pay attention!

Extended Essay 4000 word collegiate argumentative research paper Students chose their focus of study Physics Literature History Biology Art Research questions include: To what extent did Woodrow Wilson’s Latin American policy reflect the ideals presented in the Fourteen Points? How does temperature and saccharide type affect the metabolism and growth of these four basic cultures: Serratia Marcesens, Escherichia coli, Micrococcus lueus and Bacillus subtilis? Throughout the course of the years 700-1492, how important were the contributions of Islamic architecture to Spanish architecture?

CAS Creativity/ Activity/ Service Alternative to “box-checking” Many things students are ALREADY doing! Clubs Sports Dance Volunteer work Etc… CAS is NOT about making students “do” more stuff, it’s just a shift in the way they evaluate what they do.

IB Diploma Program Requirements  Complete Core Elements (TOK, CAS, EE)  Take Three Higher Level and Three Standard Level Courses  One Course (HL or SL) From Each Subject Group (Note: Group 6 exception)  Each course is two years in length EXCEPT for ESS  At Uplift...  The first year of IB courses are often integrated with AP courses.  All students take English and History as an HL and then choose a 3 rd HL course: Spanish Visual Arts BiologyMathematics ChemistryTheater

IB DP at Summit International

All Uplift Summit students will be IB students. This is what you can expect: IB Continuum School PYP (K-5) Exhibition MYP (6-10) Personal Project 11-12 Theory of Knowledge Extended Essay CAS

Uplift Summit scholars will take both AP and IB courses.  IB Diploma courses begin in 11 th grade, with the IB exam being taken in May of the 12 th grade year.  AP courses often integrated with DP courses during the 11 th grade year, with students taking the AP exam in May of the 11 th grade year.

All SIP scholars will participate in the “CORE”  Theory of Knowledge provides connections.  Extended Essay requires independent research.  CAS ensures well-roundedness.

What about college?

The DP curriculum prepares students for college 01 January 2012 A 2009 study looked at the standards for seven Diploma Programme courses and compared them to a set of standards for college-readiness. Researchers found: a high degree of alignment with college readiness standards in all subject areas many individual IB standards were more advanced than those required for success in entry-level college courses IB standards address key cognitive strategies (critical thinking, intellectual inquisitiveness and interpretation skills) that have been identified by college instructors as necessary for college success.

Colleges recognize the value of an IB education “We know the quality of IB courses, and we think the IB curriculum is terrific.” Christoph Guttentag, Director of Admissions, Duke University “The rigour of IB Diploma requirements meets our recommendation for the strongest high school preparation possible.... In sum, the IB diploma candidate who has met the challenge successfully receives strong consideration from the William & Mary admission committee.” Allison Jesse, former Associate Dean of Admissions, William and Mary College 01 January 2012

Colleges recognize the value of an IB education “In our minds, there is no more challenging curriculum than the IB curriculum. Not only does it prepare students for a demanding college programme, but the IB curriculum also instills in students a love of learning and an understanding of the truly interdisciplinary nature of education. Instead of working on each subject in a vacuum, IB students are shown how each of their classes connects both with the other classes and with the world around them.” – Thyra L. Briggs, Dean of Enrollment, Sarah Lawrence College 01 January 2012

Colleges seek IB students “We're looking for students who are engagers—students who are maximizing opportunities in the classroom, maximizing opportunities outside of the classroom. What's very unique about IB is that through its curriculum it allows students to be able to satisfy the requirements of the types of students that we're looking for.” Kedra Ishop, Vice Provost and Director of Admissions, UT Austin 01 January 2012

IB prepares students for college success “IB is well known to us as excellent preparation. Success in an IB programme correlates well with success at Harvard. We are pleased to see the credential of the IB Diploma Programme on the transcript.” Marlyn McGrath Lewis, Assistant Dean of Admissions, Harvard University, USA “The IB is a first-rate programme, one we are familiar with, and it prepares students well for a university like ours.” Fred Hargadon, Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Princeton University 01 January 2012

Summary and Closure

Summary F IB DP is for EVERYONE. It is not ONLY for the “cream of the crop” or the “best of the best.” It can be tailored to different students’ needs. F Pursuing the IB Diploma not only helps students get into college, it helps them be successful once they’re there. F IB DP supports the THINK and the ACT “keys” to College and Career Readiness (Conley).
