Terms to Know Zoning laws - legislation defining how certain land can and cannot be used. Horse Industry- Horse owners, industry suppliers, racing, horse shows/competitions, recreational riders and others, all generate economic activity and create jobs.

What do they do? Zoning and Horses: these laws Limit number of horses-per-acre Prohibit the keeping of horses on land not zoned for farming Require various business or land use licenses/permits

Why is it Important? The horse industry plays a huge role in Maryland’s economy

Most Important Findings Most significant fact: The large impact that Maryland’s horse industry has on its economy. Restrictive zoning laws won’t just impact a small group of people, but the entire state.

Project Intentions Create a presentation/argument and present in front of Howard County Council to advocate for removing or revising these laws. Share my findings with local landowners to educate them on how these changes may affect them.

Conclusion Recent changes in zoning laws will restrict farming in Maryland This negatively impacts the Maryland horse industry Laws will also impact Maryland economy due to the horse industry’s large contribution to Maryland’s annual GDP
