Digestive System By: Ban Suleiman & Nadine Tabba’a

Digestive System: The digestive system is a group of organs working together to convert food into energy and basic units to feed the whole body.

The Main Functions: The main functions of the digestive system are -Digestion -Absorption

The five main organs/parts of the digestion system are: 1.Mouth 2.Esophagus 3.Stomach 4.Small intestine 5.Large intestine

The functions of the main five organs: -Salivary Glands/Mouth: the salivary glands produce saliva, which keeps the mouth and other parts of the digestive system moist. It also helps break down carbohydrates -Esophagus: The esophagus is a long, thin, and muscular tube that connects the pharynx (throat) to the stomach. -Stomach: Partial digestion of the food takes place here. The churning action of the stomach muscles physically breaks down the food -Small intestine: The small intestine or small bowel is the part of the gastrointestinal tract between the stomach and the large intestine, and is where most of the digestion and absorption of food takes place. - Large intestine: The major function of the large intestine is to absorb water from the remaining indigestible food and transmit the useless waste material from the body.

1.The Liver 2.The Gallbladder 3.The Pancreas There are also three accessory organs which are also very important, those organs are:

The Accessory organs and how they assist the digestive system in it’s function: Liver: Produces bile and breaks down fat Gallbladder: Stores bile Pancreas: Produces insulin, (hormones that maintain/balance blood sugar

The nutrients are absorbed from the intestines into the bloodstream. -Food goes through the mouth -Food travels through the throat -Then travels through the Esophagus -Goes through the stomach -Goes inside small intestine -Then goes through the large intestine

1. It takes about seven seconds for food to travel through the esophagus and reach the stomach. 2. The adult female’s small intestine is longer than the average adult males. 3. The large intestine is approximately five feet in length. 4. The whole digestive tract is over twenty-nine feet long starting at the mouth and ending at the anus. 5. The liver has over 500 different functions, one of which is producing bile to break down digestive fats. 6. Muscles contract and relax in the esophagus to push food down to the stomach — it works even when you’re upside down! Interesting Facts
