Caloric Expenditure November 30 th and December 1 st

Objectives Understand the term calorie and energy expenditure Understand how to convert pounds to kilograms Understand how to calculate calories burned while walking

Points of Caloric Expenditure Calorie: A unit of measure for energy. The body’s energy needs depend on factors such as body size, body composition, age, and type and amount of exercise. The heart rate during exercise is a direct reflection of the intensity of the activity and the increased energy expenditure over that expended during rest. An increase in heart rate is an increase in caloric output. The energy released during muscle contraction is known as the energy expenditure.

Points of Caloric Expenditure The more time you spend at an activity the more energy you use. Higher intensity activities require more energy than lower intensity activities. Larger people tend to require more energy for the same task than smaller people do. Activities involving a large amount of muscle mass burn more calories than those involving limited muscle mass.

Points of Caloric Expenditure One pound of body weight equals.45 kilograms. The number calories burned per minute while walking is equal to.0794 times body weight in kilograms

Caloric Expenditure Worksheet 1.Record body weight: 2.Convert body weight from pounds to kilograms Body weight in pounds____ x.45 = _____ body weight in kilograms 3.Calculate the number of calories burned per minute while walking based on body weight..0794 x _____body weight in kilograms= _____number of calories burned per minute while walking

How Many Calories Would You Burn If…. How many calories would you burn in a 20 minute walk? ___ number of calories burned per minute x 20 minutes = How many calories would you burn in a 40 minute walk? ___ number of calories burned per minute x 40 minutes = How many calories would you burn in a 60 minute walk? ___ number of calories burned per minute x 60 minutes =

Beats Per Minute Calorie Burned Based on Beats per Minute = 1 st [(age x.074)+(weight in kilogram x.1263)+(Heart Beat Per Minute x.4472)–20.4022]x duration in minutes ____________________________________________________ 4.184 2 nd [(age x.074)+(weight in kilogram x.1263)+(Heart Beat Per Minute x.4472)–20.4022]x duration in minutes ____________________________________________________ 4.184 3 rd [(age x.074)+(weight in kilogram x.1263)+(Heart Beat Per Minute x.4472)–20.4022]x duration in minutes ____________________________________________________ 4.184
