Region 3 Successes: Reducing Toxics with NPEP Partnerships Sharon Pérez-Suárez, PMP, CHMM U.S. EPA Region 3 Implementing EO 13423: Opportunities to Reduce Toxic & Hazardous Chemicals
2
RCC National Priority Area: Priority and Toxic Chemicals Cut the generation of 31 priority chemicals in waste by 10% by 2008.
7
National Partnership For Environmental Priorities (NPEP) How to participate: 1. Identify one or more chemicals for reduction. 2. Develop a source reduction/recycling goal and project time line for each chemical selected. 3. Sign Up

Lead-Free Solder è General Electric – Fanuc è Substituted leaded solder with tin/copper and tin/antimony alloys è Reduction of over 126K lb of lead waste è K & L Microwave è Reduced lead use from 400 lb in 2003 to 91 lb in 2005 è Attained a level below the threshold for lead reporting via TRI Form R Michael L. Parrent, Pollution Prevention Program Manager of Tobyhanna Army Depot è Department of Army – Tobyhanna Army Depot è Substituted leaded solders with lead-free From 245 lb in 2002 to <1 lb in 2007 è Substituting cadmium with aluminum in some plating operations From 350 lb in 2002 to 150 lb in 2009

National Institutes of Health In addition, NIH has developed a decommissioning protocol for hazardous substance assessment and remediation, that can be used during deconstruction activities by federal and state agencies, universities, and other facilities across the country. The waste reduction activities included the removal and recycling of the following: 14,000 mercury-containing fluorescent lamps 2,800 lb of mercury-containing debris and other waste materials 22,000 lb of ballast materials, some of which contained PCBs 5,800 tons of non-hazardous debris, such as concrete and scrap metal For more details of this wonderful effort, I invite you to attend Breakout Session 2.7
