Three main points of delivering an effective speech: Know Your Audience Organize Your Speech Write Your Speech
3
Know Your Audience Research the audience What is the average age? What is their familiarity with the subject? Are they fun loving? What are they expecting to learn? Use appropriate words and body language Use appropriate terms depending on your audience ex. Do not use the term ‘software development’ when delivering a career day speech to 2 nd graders. Adjust your Image Be sure to smile and look friendly and warm. Yet be sure to maintain an authoritative air when presenting to colleagues. Ways to convey your message Treat the audience as a single entity. Make eye contact. Use audience participation when possible.

Organize Your Speech 1. Introduction 2. Body 3. Closing Introduction Be dramatic. Ex. “I’m about to reveal a plan that will drastically alter the face of humanity as we know it!” Tell a joke. Humor will loosen up your audience. Tell a story. This will make the audience see you as a person instead of a boring speaker. Remember: Keep it short! Body Create a formal outline or a mind-map. This will help you to organize your thoughts and speech. Closing Give a concise summation of your speech in two or three sentences. Ask for questions. Do not end with “I’m done.”
5
Write Your Speech Vary word choice Do not repeatedly use the same words. Use a thesaurus. Keep the writing conversational Use rhetorical questions. Refer to the event that you are attending. Use Humor Do not use humor that is offensive. Perhaps self-deprecating humor? Rewrite your speech Rewrite and tighten your speech. You will find mistakes! Index Cards Jot down only the main points to keep you on track. Remember to number them!
