River Thames Basin (MEDC) River Lemon Basin  Water Supply/Siphoning  Industrial Development  Transportation & Trade  Residential Development  Conservation  Recreational & leisure Activities  Energy Production  Agriculture  Flood Management  Transportation  Fishing, farming & other agricultural activities  Residential development  Tourism  Flood Management  Quarrying  Mineral Extraction

 A river can have multiple uses for many reasons.  Geological composition  Attractive scenery  Unique micro-climate/ habitat  Energy Change  Fertile land Mineral extraction or Quarrying Tourism/recreation conservation Energy Production Agriculture

 Flows through the cities of Oxford, Reading and London  Is the most developed river in the UK  It has a population of 12million which is 20% of the population  Runs through 14counties  Covers an area of 13,000km²  Flood plain is 896km²  300,000 tonnes of sediment are carried annually  The source is located near Cirencester  215 Miles long from source to mouth

 Water Supply – every day around 4700Million litres of water is abstracted form the river or the ground water beneath  Population growth and Economic development are the main reasons for the rise in water abstraction  Conservation – A number of sites have been designated as sssi’s  The mudflats and salt marshes are ecologically important and support a number of different species  These are protected by the MSPA – Marshes specific protection areas certification

 Industrial Development – Geologically the rock is made up of chalk and limestone which means mineral extraction can take place  Many factories locate themselves at the river Thames because the land is cheap due to it being a flood plain. There’s also water for cooling purposes.  Flood Management – The Thames barriers protect 420,000 houses an buildings in central London from flooding  Was operational in 1982 and cost a staggering £4billion  On average it has to close three times a year however in 2001/2002 it had to close 24 times.

 Located in Devon, South West England  Very short river at 16KM Long  Approximately 27, 280 people live in The River Lemon Drainage Basin  Biggest settlement is Newton Abbot  Source is located in Haytor  The river sig feeds into it near Dartmoor  Flows through a 400metre long culvert which directs it under the town centre.

 Agriculture/Farming – Ullacombe farm is the largest in the immediate area.  700Ha have been cultivated for grazing. Some of the farms also produce there own energy.  Residential Development - the river basin is home to 27,280 people, most of which live directly on the flood plain. Sewage and drainage are managed relatively efficiently.

 Military Training – 102km² of land are used for military training. This is roughly 13% of the park.  Live ammo is used which can create noise pollution and contaminate the soil with lead.  Conservationists - There are a number of protected species such as the otter which can be found in the drainage basin.  Afforestation is an activity that has been started near the village of Bickington

 Management takes place in the form of the CFMP which is the catchment flood management plan.  This is a sub division of the Environment agency.  The Holbeam Dam has been built to reduce floods.
