2. Varroa mite is one of the main causes of CCD in the past 10 years Varroa mites are believed to be originating in South East Asia. They have been implicated in CCD, due to their ability to weaken colonies and to transmit diseases. Without treatment, an infested colony is likely to die within three years. 80% of Varroa lives in brood cells where chemical treatments are not effective.

3. Remedies against Varroa mites Several chemical remedies, but their effectiveness is limited as Varroa can develop resistance quickly. Recent studies show also that the combination of antibiotics (ossitetraciclin) with anti-Varroa products (Coumaphos and Fluvalinate) can have lethal consequences for colonies. Moreover, the residues of chemical products pollute honey, propolis, royal jelly and wax.

4. Heat therapy against Varroa mites Tubingen University and other researchers demonstrated that thermic therapy is the only effective method to kill Varroa mites. In several tests, about 80% of mites were killed and all adult bees and larvae survived, as Varroa can tolerate a temperature up to 42 degrees. Varroa mites cannot adapt to the heat treatment which does not leave any residues.
