Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on February 22, 1732 Oldest son of Nine Siblings Parents were Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington.

Never attended any school or college. Educated as a child by his father. Self educated as he became an adult. Favorite subject was math. Studied: Mathematics Surveying The classics Rules of civility

Father died when George Washington was 11. Death ended plans for George to go to England to be educated like his other brothers. Learned social graces from his mother Good conversation Correct table manners Proper entertaining Social skills helped be relieved with elder. Helped consider him for advancement Hard worker Began a journal at 16 Good handwriting Learned surveying At 17 started own business as a surveyor Physically active and Strong Described by Thomas Jefferson as best horseman of his age. Loved fox hunting from horseback.

Only went on one trip outside of the United States in his life. He accompanied his brother on a trip to Barbados to help cure Lawrence A brother who suffered from tuberculosis. Thought that the warmer weather would help relieve his tuberculosis.
