The Spark! The tension snapped when the Archduke (Franz Ferdinand) of Austria Hungary was assassinated in Serbia. Him and his wife, Sophie, were on a visit to Austria Hungary to observe their military.

Germany was the main aggressor of WWI. Britain and France declared war when Germany invaded Belgium

Germany was the first to use submarine warfare against its enemies In order to prevent Britain (its enemy) from trading and receiving supplies, Germany threatened to attack any ship that come within striking distance of Britain’s coast

President Woodrow Wilson, 1915 “There is such a thing as a man being too proud to fight. There is such a thing as a nation being so right it does not need to convince people by force what is right.” - When the war in Europe began, the United States chose to stay out of it by following a policy of neutrality.

Conditions of Warfare Trench warfare was made popular during WWI. Soldiers dug huge holes and tunnels in the ground where they slept, ate, attacked, and died.

Trench Warfare Both sides dug deep trenches (ditches) Conditions were awful: dead bodies insects/rats/weather/ wet/muddy/cold

No Man’s Land No Mans Land - area between two trenches, seeded with land mines and barbed wire.

Over the Top Soldiers left their trench to cross No Man's Land and attack the enemy in their trench. Always involved high casualties. Very unpopular with soldiers!

United States Zimmerman Note - Telegram from Germany to Mexico. Germany promised to help Mexico take land it had lost to the U.S.A. if Mexico would enter WWI and fight the U.S.

Life in the Trenches Now, you will read over the handout “life in the trenches.” After examining each box, you will be writing a letter home as if you were fighting in World War I about life in the trenches. Include at least 7 things that describe what life was like living in the trenches.
