2. Once seated begin your Do Now on a separate sheet of paper. DO NOW Why is it important to always use lab safety? What could happen if you do not? Please write at least a paragraph

4. Please take the next few minutes and read over the Syllabus carefully.

6. Science is a hands-on laboratory class You will be doing many laboratory activities, which may require the use of hazardous chemicals and expensive lab equipment. Safety in the Science classroom is priority #1 To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you through your Student Lab Safety Contract. These rules must be followed at all times. A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in labs.

7. Time Please take the next 5 minutes and read over the lab safety contract carefully.

8. Turn to a shoulder partner and tell them at least two things that you read in the contract and explain it.

9. Be responsible at ALL Times. No horseplay Follow ALL instructions carefully Do NOT play with lab equipment until instructed to do so Food, drink, and gum are not allowed in the science classroom. Lab Safety Is Everyone's Responsibility! Failure to follow safety guidelines will result in you loosing your right to do lab work and in a referral.

10. Keep the science lab clean and organized Notify the teacher IMMEDIATELY of any accidents or unsafe conditions in the science classroom!!! Wash you hands with soap and water after experiments. – Sinks are located on either side of the classroom Lab Safety Is Everyone's Responsibility!

11. Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, flames, or heating devices. If a chemical gets in your eye, flush in water for 15 minutes and notify the teacher. Eye Protection Sharp Objects When using knifes or other sharp objects always walk with the points facing down. Cut away from fingers and body. Electrical Safety Do not place a cord where someone can trip over it. Never use electricity around water. Unplug all equipment before leaving the room.

12. Animal Safety Only handle living organisms with teacher permission. Always treat living organisms humanely. Wash your hands after handling animals. Heating Safety Tie back hair and loose clothes when working with open flames. Never look into a container as you are heating it. Heated metal and glass looks cool, use tongs or gloves before handling. Never leave a heat source unattended.

13. Chemical Safety Read all labels twice before removing a chemical from the container. Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless instructed by the teacher. Transfer chemicals carefully! Hand Safety If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes. Carry glassware carefully. Plant Safety Do not eat any plants in lab. Wash your hands after handling plants.

14. Fire Blanket – Located in back of classroom in the red container Fire Extinguisher – Located on wall in front of class near smart board and door. To operate the fire extinguisher remember P-A-S-S P- Pull the Pin A-Aim the hose at the base of the fire from 5-6 feet away. S-Squeeze the handle. S-Sweep the hose back and forth across the fire.

16. Eye Wash Station– Located in back of classroom near door Lab Safety shower – Located in back of classroom near door The use of the eye wash station and lab safety shower is reserved for emergency situations only. Horseplay with either piece of equipment will result in severe consequences.

17. As a group, read through each scenario. Discuss the safety violation, how the violation could injure someone, what other consequences could result from the violation, and, most importantly, what SHOULD have happened instead.

18. Now I will call on you to come up and act out one of the safety scenarios for the rest of the class If you are worried about which one to choose don’t worry… – I will choose for you

19. The teacher was not in the room, yet. Jake began weighing the chemicals and touching them with his hands. His nose itched, so he scratched it.

20. Heather and Jennifer were tardy and missed the instructions and demonstration for the lab investigation. They gathered the materials and watched their classmates to see what to do, not taking the time to read the directions.

21. Eric was heating up a test tube. He did not put on safety goggles because he was wearing glasses. He slanted the tube away from his work area, but towards the students on the opposite side of his lab table.

22. Anna broke a test tube. She carefully picked up the pieces with one hand and placed them in her other hand. Then she dumped the broken pieces of glass into the trash can.

23. The cuff of Sam’s long sleeved shirt caught fire. He ran to show his teacher.

24. Brad and Colleen had too much chemical solution left over from their investigation. They dumped the excess into the sink and rinsed it down with water.

25. Diana and Mike put away a few materials, but not everything because the bell rang and they didn’t want to be late to their next class.

26. Monique and Derek were finished early, so after cleaning and resetting their lab station, they began to eat their lunch.

27. Remember safety is our #1 priority in the science lab. Please be mindful of the rules, they are here for a reason. Lab Safety Is Everyone's Responsibility! Safety First!!
