Q & A How is the GEF-UNDP HCLME project catalyzing the partnership with Consorcio? http://www.grupoconsorcio.com/conoce-consorcio/quienes-somos http://www.grupoconsorcio.com/conoce-consorcio/quienes-somos http://www.undercurrentnews.com/2013/12/19/spanish-processor-to-expand-into-americas-through-peruvian-subsidiary/ “Spanish processor to expand into Americas through Peruvian subsidiary” How are connections made? Via MEP (UK fisheries networking), WWF, TNC, MSC and the industry’s needs. Lessons learnt? Mutually beneficial relationship: company requires MSC certification and has to comply with 3 principles = 1) Sustainable fish stocks; 2) Minimising environmental impact ; 3) Effective management. While the company can ensure it complies with principles 1 & 2, there has to be good state fisheries management to allow compliance with principle 3.

Discussion topics… To be provided by Jay ! … However with private sector investment in IW interventions it’s important to recognize that this is about making a profit, hence any partnership needs to ensure that profitability and sustainability need to be synonymous For example the fishmeal and fish oil industry in Peru – waste water cleaning to remove all fish oil products = more profit and less pollution.

The MSC standard has 3 overarching principles that every fishery must prove that it meets: Principle 1: Sustainable fish stocks The fishing activity must be at a level which is sustainable for the fish population. Any certified fishery must operate so that fishing can continue indefinitely and is not overexploiting the resources. Principle 2: Minimising environmental impact Fishing operations should be managed to maintain the structure, productivity, function and diversity of the ecosystem on which the fishery depends. Principle 3: Effective management The fishery must meet all local, national and international laws and must have a management system in place to respond to changing circumstances and maintain sustainability. The three principles are supported by 31 more detailed criteria. http://www.msc.org/about-us/standards/standards/msc-environmental-standard
