2. The Roles of the Executive Branch Headed by the president of the United States; the chief executive of the nation. Executes the laws of the land. Prepares the annual budget for congressional approval. Appoints cabinet officers, ambassadors, and federal Supreme Court judges. Administers the federal bureaucracy or government.

3. The President: Review Must be: Elected to a 4-year term by the Electoral College The Electoral College votes based on popular vote The number of electors for each state is based on Congressional Representation 35 years or older 14-year resident, and a natural born citizen

The Two-Term Precedent Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1933-1945) was the only President to win more than two terms (4) George Washington set the precedent for the limit of two terms until the 22 nd Amendment was passed in 1951 The 22 nd Amendment places a term limit on the presidency Puzzler: you cannot serve more than two terms, but a President CAN legally serve for up to 10 years. Chief Executive: head of the executive branch Acts as boss of federal government workers in 15 Executive Departments These departments help the President carry out, enforce, or execute the law The President appoints Cabinet members to advise and assist him (Congress must approve them) Example: Holding cabinet meetings and appointing federal officials

8. Chief Legislator Proposer of the legislative agenda- President can propose bills and must sign bills into law or veto them President often calls members of Congress to lobby for his agenda Presents his agenda to Congress in the annual State of the Union Address

9. Commander-In-Chief Head of the nation’s armed forces. President decides where armed forces are to be stationed and weapons to be used Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is top military commander under the President (works in the Pentagon)

10. Chief Diplomat Architect of American foreign policy. Conducts foreign policy by directing the actions of American ambassadors Signs treaties and trade agreements with leaders of other nations

11. Chief of the Party Leader of the political party that controls the executive branch. Presidents help members of their political party get elected or appointed to office. Presidents make campaign speeches needed for re-election Head of fund-raising for the party

12. Chief Citizen Representative of all the people. Work for the public interest.

13. Role: Chief Guardian of the Economy Monitors unemployment Inflation, taxation, business, and general welfare of the nation Does not control the economy, but gets the credit if it goes well and gets the blame if it does not go well.

14. Other Powers of the President Limited Judicial Powers- Can pardon (forgive) or reprieve (delay) a criminal’s sentence. May grant amnesty (pardon) to a group of people. Presidential power has increased since the Constitution was ratified.

15. How does the executive branch influence policymaking? Proposing legislation in an annual speech to Congress (State of the Union Address) Appealing directly to the people. Approving or vetoing legislation. Appointing officials who carry out the laws.*
