Homework There will be nightly homework, mostly in math. The students need to read 20 minutes or more a night. They should read 10 minutes orally. If your child can’t do the homework please send me a note and hand it in the next day. Math homework need to be corrected and signed by you.

Reading Components Reading includes oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics and word study, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.

Reading Block Whole Class Focus Instruction- by using a shared reading strategy the students will learn and practice comprehension and fluency. Phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, word study, and word recognition skills will be reviewed. Small Group Focus- instructional strategies will be taught. Other students will be doing practicing skills already taught. Whole Class Focus Share- to conclude and reflect on the lesson and share.

Mental processes involved in handwriting are connected to other important learning functions Automaticity allows for easier generation of ideas when writing, just as knowing your facts in math is important to problem solving Learning vertical manuscript reinforces the same letters students see in books, strengthening the reading-writing connection

Why Zaner-Bloser? Researched based Can be taught in as little as 15 minutes a day. Uses academic language and modeling Teaches a vertical manuscript alphabet that approximates the letterforms most widely used in environmental print Meets the needs of all students by teaching in the correct developmental sequence and allowing for differentiation, based on learning style, language acquisition, and motor development.
