1 SWOT Analysis of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS)
The University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) includes three teaching hospitals in Philadelphia. These include: HUP (the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania), PPMC (Penn Presbyterian Medical Center), and Pennsylvania Hospital. It also partners with Good Shepherd rehab and long-term acute-care hospital, Penn Home Care and Hospice Service, and many outpatient primary care facilities and service programs.

The numbers (2012): 4.3 billion operating revenue, 21,864 Employees, 1,632 Licensed Beds, 2,593 Physicians, 78,262 adult admission, 2,080,269 Outpatient visits, 136,374 Emergency Room visits, 8,971 births, 6.6 million net sq. ft. building space Penn Medicine again had the most recommended physicians in the region featured in the Philadelphia magazine “Top Docs” list Magnet Recognized: The nursing staffs of HUP and PPMC have been awarded Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center was rated “exceptional” — the highest rating — by the National Cancer Institute . Penn Medicine is the first health system in the region to have all member hospitals certified as Primary Stroke Centers by the Joint Commission

Long History and reputation. HUP was established in1874 as the first teaching hospital in the nation. Focus in research: In 2012: $587 million in total Sponsored Program Awards, $398 million NIH Awards, 5 million State Research funding, 57 new patents awarded. UPHS focusses in research and development: the first general vaccine against pneumonia, the introduction of total intravenous feeding, the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other imaging technologies, and the discovery of the Philadelphia chromosome Environmental friendly: The Pearlman Center is said to be an environmental friendly building, built from scrap materials all over.

All 3 hospitals are inner city hospital - a lot of uninsured & underinsured patients – 136,374 ER visits in 2012 Rising cost of healthcare Being a system of teaching hospitals: impersonal, not protecting the privacy patients

5 UPHS SWOT Analysis OPPORTUNITIES
Highly trained APRNs. The number of APRNs is expected to be 200,000 by the year % of these APRNs are expected to be in primary care. UPHS has the opportunity to tap into these trained primary care providers who will help lower the cost of care. UPHS has a lot of APRNs that are working as registered nurses. UPHS can utilize them to provide cost-efficient care resulting in reduction of cost of care. Implementation of ACA – cost reduction opportunities

Rising cost of healthcare: Uninsured & underinsured -136,374 ER visits Workforce shortage: PCP vs. ACA implementation in 2014.

7 UPHS SWOT Analysis Recommendations
Utilize APRNs effectively; Support the Consensus Model Researches since 1980’s show APRNs provide, at least, same quality of care as physicians, but cheaper. Patient satisfaction is better with APRNs. No research has showed to the contrary So what is the wait for?
