Endings Matter The –ed verb ending must be pronounced in English because it tells the listener when something happens I walk into the room. Simple Present I walked into the room. Simple Past

The –ed verb ending is pronounced 3 different ways: 1. [t] walked [wakt] 2. [d] loved [l ʌ vd] 3. [id] visited [vizitid]

Listen to the following verbs and place them in the [t], [d], or [id] column on your worksheet according to what you hear.

Unvoiced vs. Voiced Sounds Put your fingers on your vocal cords (throat) and try to say the following sounds: zzzz vvvv ssss ffffff What did you feel?

When we make voiced sounds [z], [v], our vocal cords vibrate. Voiced sounds are followed by the [d] pronunciation of the – ed verb ending When we make voiceless sounds [s], [f], our vocal cords do not vibrate. Voiceless sounds are followed by the [t] pronunciation of the – ed verb ending

Writing Sentences – 10 minutes Write 5 sentences using the –ed verb ending and practice reading the sentences out loud. Summarize a News Item – 10 minutes Summarize a news item in 3 sentences.

Visit the CRL and listen to a news program in English. Do you hear the –ed ending? Write down any words that you hear that end in –ed.
