1 Bell ringer  Enlightened Absolutism  Federal System I Can … Explain How monarchs in Europe (Enlightened Absolutism) and the American Revolution made Enlightenment ideas into law.

2 Enlightened Absolutism  Philosophes believed in natural rights.  Equality before the law; freedom of religious worship; freedom of speech; freedom of press; right to assemble, hold property, and pursue happiness.  To preserve these rights people needed to be governed by enlightened rulers. ( Enlightened Absolutism)

3 Frederick the Great  Monarch of Prussia (1712- 1786)  Well versed in Enlightenment ideals  Abolished use of torture, granted limited freedom of speech and press, granted some religious toleration  Kept system of serfdom

4 Catherine the Great  Monarch of Russia (1762- 1796)  Seemed to favor reform  Did not enact any Enlightenment reforms  Expanded serfdom to new territories

5 Joseph II  Austrian Monarch  Believed need to sweep away anything that stood in way of reason  Abolished serfdom, eliminated slavery, enacted religious toleration  Most everything he did, failed and was overturned upon his death

9 Causes: Taxes  Sugar Act 1764- First attempt to collect taxes, duties on sugar and molasses  Stamp Act 1765- tax placed on legal documents and newspapers. Used money collected to pay for war and colonies’ defenses  Townsend Act 1767- tax on tea, lead, paint and glass, money used to pay royal governors. “ No taxation without representation.”

10 Major Events:  Battle of Lexington and Concord 1775 first shots fired.  July 4, 1776 Declaration of Independence  Yorktown 1781- General Cornwallis surrenders to the American and French forces.  Treaty of Paris 1783- British end the war, American independence is recognized

11 The United States Constitution  The Constitution of the United States of America established a federal system of government based on power shared between the national and state governments.

12 Bill of Rights  The first ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America  Guaranteed:  Freedom of religion  Freedom of Speech  Freedom of Press  Freedom to Petition  Freedom to Assemble  The right to bear arms  To be protected against unreasonable searches and arrests  Guaranteed trail by jury  Due process  Protection of property
