Bell ringer Enlightened Absolutism Federal System I Can … Explain How monarchs in Europe (Enlightened Absolutism) and the American Revolution made Enlightenment ideas into law.

Enlightened Absolutism Philosophes believed in natural rights. Equality before the law; freedom of religious worship; freedom of speech; freedom of press; right to assemble, hold property, and pursue happiness. To preserve these rights people needed to be governed by enlightened rulers. ( Enlightened Absolutism)

Catherine the Great Monarch of Russia (1762- 1796) Seemed to favor reform Did not enact any Enlightenment reforms Expanded serfdom to new territories

American Revolution Britain wanted to raises taxes in the colonies to pay for the Seven Years War 1775- Second Continental Congress approves the Declaration of Independence. Causes: Taxes Sugar Act 1764- First attempt to collect taxes, duties on sugar and molasses Stamp Act 1765- tax placed on legal documents and newspapers. Used money collected to pay for war and colonies’ defenses Townsend Act 1767- tax on tea, lead, paint and glass, money used to pay royal governors. “ No taxation without representation.”
