Bell Work Have you ever felt judged based on a physical, religious, cultural or racial trait? Explain. How did this event make you feel? Have you ever judged someone based on appearance or cultural differences? Unintentionally? What things come to mind when you think of the Holocaust? (You don’t have to share this with the class.)

Definitions Alien Enemy- Any native, former or current citizen of a certain foreign nation that is that is in conflict with the domestic nation. They are liable to be apprehended, restrained, or removed. (Living in a country that is at war with your home country.) Empathy- ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Blue Star Activity: WORLD WAR TWO I am going to hand out work sheets. These sheets relate to groups of people involved in World War Two. Each sheet will have a category on the top: German in Germany. German in America. German Jew. Take a few minutes and look over the questions on the sheet.(Brainstorm) Find your group and start discussing and answering questions. When I say PASS collect your groups papers and had them to me. I will give you another groups papers and you will read/discuss their answers.

Germans in Germany What do you think it was like to be a German in Germany during World War Two? What do you think they were afraid of? Were they afraid of anything? What do you think these people felt on an daily basis? How much did the media affect their views? What were some concerns of these people? What did their future look like?

Jews in Germany What was it like to be a Jew in Germany during World War Two? How did these people feel about their culture/ background? Ashamed? Knowing what you do about the holocaust, what do you think life was like for a Jew before they were taken to camps? What are some modern day examples of groups of people that are looked down upon by society? Review your bell work writing, do your own experiences relate to the ways Jews felt or were treated? Why?

Germans in America What would it be like to be called an enemy in your own country What kind of prejudice would this people have faced in their situation? What types of things would these people be feeling everyday? Paranoia? Have you ever felt like a target based on your culture? What other cultures have experienced this? Is cultural discrimination still alive today? Where? Who is it aimed at? Do you have any ideas on how to fix this issue?

TIME IS UP! Please arrange the desks in a large circle and prepare to engage in full class discussion. What did you think about the group discussion? What do you think it was like to be a German in America? How does this relate to Muslims/ Middle eastern people in the USA? In what ways has this activity opened your eyes to the perspectives of others? Thoughts? Questions?

Book Talk Meggie Dillon's life has been turned upside down by World War II. Meggie's father has announced that they must help the war effort and move to Willow Run, Michigan, where he'll work nights in a factory building important war planes that will help fight the enemy in Europe. Willow Run will be the greatest adventure ever, Meggie thinks. There she meets Patches and Harlan, other kids like her from far-off places whose parents have come here to do their part in the war. And there she faces questions about courage, and what it takes to go into battle, like Eddie, and to keep hope alive on the home front.

Meggie Dillons Family Grandfather- Fought in War and won a medal. Meggies Brother- Eddie is currently fighting in the war. Meggies Father- Moved his family to go work in a factory to help the war effort. HOWEVEVER. Meggie and her family still suffer from discrimination and accusations of being (German Spies)

HAVE A GREAT DAY! Assignment: Read the first chapter of Willow Run and write down two questions you have over the text or history. Bring your book tomorrow and be prepared to discuss your reading!
