Celebrating Health Information Professionals Week 2015

Topics Data collection Quality of data Data in the care continuum The HIP’s role

Data Collection Where Does Data Come From? Patients/family Registration Clinicians Ancillary departments

Data Collection Secondary Data: “Data derived from the primary patient record, such as an index or a database.” Master patient index Disease index Cancer registry Trauma registry Birth registry

Data Collection Secondary Data is shared with other entities such as: Payers Clearinghouses Third-party vendors Public health agencies Government agencies Health information organizations Consumers

Quality of Data Data Quality Domains: Application: The purpose for the data collection Collection: The processes by which data elements are accumulated Warehousing: Processes and systems used to archive data and data journals Analysis: The process of translating data into information utilized for an application

Quality of Data Accessibility Consistency Currency Granularity Precision Accuracy Comprehensiveness Definition Relevancy Timeliness Data Characteristics

Quality of Data Data Consistency: The Extent to Which the Healthcare Data Are Reliable and Consistent Across Applications.

Quality of Data Warehousing employs edits or conversion tables to ensure consistency. Coordinate edits and tables with data definition changes/differences across systems. Document edits and tables. – When new data are loaded they should be checked against existing data for consistency. For example, is someone reporting a different race for a patient?

Quality of Data Analyze data under reproducible circumstances by using standard formulas, scientific equations, programming, variance calculations, and other methods. Compare “apples to apples.” – Any manipulation of data, aggregating or otherwise, should be documented thoroughly. For example, how is BMI calculated, and has the formula been checked?
