2 BRAINSTORMING In your journal write about the following: – Who is your best friend? What words describe him/her? – Who is your worst enemy? What words describe him/her? – Who is your favorite person? What words describe him/her? * Now we can start writing your next type of poem*

3 Poem #2 - Tanka Similar to a Haiku Measured in syllables: 5-7-5-7-7 Example: Saying Goodbye Carefully I walk Trying so hard to be brave They all see my fear Dark glasses cover their eyes As mine flow over with tears *** Your assignment: Write four Tanka Poems in your journal***

4 Poem#3 – Cinquain Very similar to Haiku – Often about nature – Follow a set pattern – Do not rhyme Also originated in Japan Only five lines

5 Cinquain 1 st line: One noun 2 nd line: Two adjectives that describe the noun 3 rd line: Three –ing words that express action 4 th line: Four word phrase that expresses feeling 5 th line: One synonym for the noun in the first line

6 Cinquain Examples Spaghetti Messy, spicy Slurping, sliding, falling Between my plate and mouth Delicious Teachers Exhausted, reflective Correcting, speaking, rejoicing Busting with unsolicited helpfulness Bridges

7 Assignment #3 Write three Cinquain Poems – Use the brainstorming page we did earlier to help you with this. Trade with a peer to edit – Write three strengths and three weaknesses about your partners poems. – Help them pick the strongest one – Sign and Date their paper

8 Poem #4 – Diamonte 7 Lines long and forms a diamond Lines 1 and 7 are opposite nouns Lines 2 and 6 are two ing verbs that refer to the closest noun. Lines 3 and 5 contain three adjectives describing the closest noun. Line 4 contains 4 nouns: two that relate to the noun in line 1 and two that relate to the noun in line 7. Sunrise Waking, Beginning Early, Brilliant, Inspirational Morning, Brightness, Darkness, Evening Late, Dim, Calm Sleeping, Ending Sunset
