No limit requirement as long on you answer the questions to the best of your ability Literary Terms (MONDAY Define ONLY)- diction, tone, and rhetoric. 4 Write a boast poem of 5-7 lines about yourself! Does not have to rhyme 2 lines should contain alliteration A caesura- a pause between lines (COMMAS)!! 100,000 S/O to Future! “Then, when darkness had dropped, Grendel Went up to Herot, wondering what the warriors Would do in that hall when their drinking was done.” Two kennings- a specialized metaphor made of compound words. Use two of your kennings from yesterday’s poem! “So mankind’s enemy continued his crimes” (Grendel) In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlac’s Follower and the strongest of the Geats” (Beowulf) You are bragging about yourself!

6 An epic hero is a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. What epic heroes have you read about or watched on television? Characteristics: Excels in skill, strength, and courage Succeeds in war and adventure Values honor and glory Battles demons and monsters Accepts challenges and often invites problems Often makes impulsive decisions and takes risks Encounters temptation of some sort Achieves their goal

9 Style is the way in which an author writes. They use certain diction (word choice), sentence complexity, patterns of sounds, imagery, and symbols. Compare and contrast two texts you have read in school before. How did the author’s style differ? If you can’t think of a book, think of movies. Iron Man is portrayed differently than Captain America. Why is that if they are both equally good superheroes? Vocabulary Terms- Find one synonym. Page 152. 10 Who is more important, the individual or the community? Think about this… Is it better that we stay true to ourselves, or that we have peace by following the majority? Explain and give examples. 11 What do you think the purpose is for narratives such as “The Devil and Tom Walker”? Inform, explain, entertain, persuade? What about the style (word choice, sentence complexity, imagery, and symbol) leads you to your conclusion about the author’s purpose? What would you say the theme of the story is? The tone? The mood?

12 Copy down the bubble map and fill in what you have learned about Tom Walker. Tome Walker should be in the middle. His characteristics should be in the external bubbles.
