Most Demanding Operating Systems
Comparative Analysis
2
What is a Operating System?
A program that controls the execution of application programs An interface between user and hardware. Makes the computer more convenient to use Manages the resources of the computer Allows resources to be used in an efficient manner (Scheduling) Acts like a real world Government.
3
Most Demanding OS in the World.
There are three Major Classes of OS in the world:
4
MAC OS Mac OS is a series of graphical user interface-based operating systems developed by Apple Inc. for their Macintosh line of computer systems. Mac OS was designed only to run on Apple Computers. In 1984, Apple introduced the Macintosh PC with the Macintosh Operating System. Apple names its OS as “Mac OS”, beginning in 1997 which was previously known as “System”.
5
First Mac The first Mac was introduced by Apple’s then-chairman Steve Jobs was the first successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a Graphical User Interface(GUI). The Mac OS could be easily distinguished from other Operating systems because it was the only OS with a full GUI. These releases could only run one program at a time which could later run multiple programs.

Linux Linux was originally built by Linus Torvalds at the University of Helsinki in Linux is a Kernal-based, fully memory-protected, multitasking operating system . Open Source Operating System. Free Software Source Code Available It runs on a wide range of hardware from PCs to Macs.

Pros. & Cons Linux falls short in the number of different applications available for it. Linux programs distributes freely since they are not developed by commercial software companies, but instead are created under the GNU Public License, which makes the software free Linux software lacks the GUI and is therefore not “liked” by many users. Linux requires 386 architecture to run. Thus, it is compatible with any improved architecture such as 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro, etc There are drivers available for much many types of hardware devices
10
Pros. & Cons. Cont. Linux seems to be more prepared for protecting itself because of the beginning developments of Linux, UNIX, and FreeBSD which were aimed at top notch security. Linux allows does not create registry keys in a way Windows does allowing a user to browse installed components registry keys, which contain important information. Linux is more virus proof since viruses – malicious programs either cannot be run automatically on the Linux machine.
11
Windows It has powerful networking capabilities, is multitasking, and extremely user friendly. First version of Windows – Windows 3.1 released in 1992 by Microsoft. Windows is a GUI based operating system.

14
Pros. & Cons Since Microsoft is more popular, the Hardware products are aimed at the biggest market – Windows, such that the product would be sold and used widely. There are much more various applications available for Microsoft since the population of Window’s users is greater than Linux’s Windows has its own share of problems – the fact that some software is not compliant for different versions of windows (i.e. Windows 95/98) and many times the GUI concept is overused such that command arguments cannot be passed to the program (NTFS is not Backward Compatible).

Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison
Ability to customise You can change the background and general colour scheme and fonts for your windows desktop. You can rewrite the code for Linux so that you can customise it further, meaning that you can have a completely different layout than everyone else. Overall Linux is the most customisable, because it is open source and you can alter the codes for it. DOS can also be open source, but there is no GUI to customise. Windows is relatively customisable, but not fully. You can mainly just change the colours and looks of things slightly.

Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison
Working Environment Most widely used OS in Client environment. studies suggest that the market-share of Linux at the client-side is around 3%. At the server-side, studies suggest double-digit growth of Linux adoption and that Linux server shipments increasing 25% each year. This slow growth can be attributed to lack of ease of use, small variety of applications and problems with drivers that enable users to connect other devices to their computing systems.

Support for connectivity for portable media
Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison Support for connectivity for portable media Windows supports connectivity for different media, including USB drives, CD/DVD, Syncing, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Linux doesn’t have as wide a range of support for connectivity but you can download a software development kit to improve its connectivity. With Windows being the most popular OS out of the 3, it has more connectivity available, and expansions available to enable more connectivity. You can also download expansions to make Linux more supportive for connectivity, but there are not as many things available as for windows. As DOS is an old OS and isn’t really used anymore, it doesn’t really have any support for connecting media. Newer versions of DOS might, because they are built with Windows on top of them.
18
Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison Security
Windows has an administrative user that can make changes to the computer, but it has other users that can perform small tasks. You need the administrator’s password to change anything if on another user. For Linux you have to enter the administrator’s password in order to make changes or download things, so it is harder for harmful programs to gain access to your computer. You can also change the codes to make it more secure. The most secure would be Linux, because of its ability to customise, viruses wouldn’t be able to access the computer because it wouldn’t be specific enough. Because of Windows’ popularity, it makes it the most vulnerable to attacks. This is also because you can’t edit the code.
19
Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison Stability
Windows is relatively stable, but vista is more unstable than other versions. Vista didn’t sell because it crashed when it was launched, and Microsoft released windows 7 soon after it. Linux operating systems are stable, because you can rewrite the codes for it. Only Upgradation after successful intervals. Overall I think that Linux is the most stable, because it doesn’t have as much software and other things running as Windows, and it is more popular than DOS, so it is better tested and improved. Windows crashes a lot and needs rebooting a lot because of the amount of programs running on it.

Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison
Ease of management Because Windows is so popular, people are more familiar with the way it works so it is fairly easy for everyone to use. Later versions of Linux have greatly improved in their ease of management side, but because it is open source you have to know how to write programming language to alter things. Windows is probably the easiest to manage because of tutorials available to teach users and how most people are taught to use Windows over any other OS. Linux is simple as well to an extent, but you have to know the commands to manage things past a certain point. DOS is purely command driven so it is easy to manage things if you know the codes.

Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison
Associated utilities Windows is the most popular OS, so it has a much wider range of utilities. Linux has a wide range of utilities available to download. Windows has the most associated utilities, developed by Microsoft and many other companies. Linux has a lot, but not as many, with many people writing their own because it is open source. DOS has the least associated utilities, because it isn’t used for applications because it is just code.
22
Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison Cost
The least version of windows costs around $150. You also have to pay for other software you want on windows. But the New version is Free to download for all existing users. Linux is free to download, so it doesn’t cost you anything. There are software downloads that are free, such as open office etc. Linux is free of charge to download, and so is. This is better than Windows, which costs to download. Further software for Windows also costs, and with the other operating systems software costs a lot less or nothing at all.
23
Comparative Analysis Feature Windows Linux Comparison
Support for the user Windows has its own help section, and websites/forums where you can talk to people and gain information about windows. There are also books available for each version of windows to help you. Linux has books available for help and also online forums. There is most support available for windows, with a help section actually in the OS and with many websites and books and other sources. Linux has a lot of support as well, but not as much as Windows. DOS has the least amount of support available. Windows users need the most support because of its stability.

Conclusion Windows is the standard OS in use, as it has the capability of running maximum applications. However, it turns out to be a nightmare when viruses or spyware attack. In case you need to create music, edit photos, or generate video, Mac OSX featured in an Apple computer is the choice. This OS is also less prone to spyware and virus attacks as compared to the Windows. Gives compatibility problems with printers, back-up drives, and 3G wireless cards. Linux is the choice of administrators because of its almost 100% invulnerability to spyware and viruses and its capability to control a network. However, its con is difficult troubleshooting for a novice user, comparability issues, and lack of support for games.
