4 Dedicated Versus Distributed Dedicated – Confined to a single room. Distributed – Interconnected components spread over multiple rooms.

5 Advantages of Distributed Audio/Video Systems Lower cost than placing comparable equipment in several rooms. Greater availability of multiple programming sources. Easily updated as new technologies emerge. Increases the livability of the home. May even increase the resale value of the home.

6 Factors Affecting Whole-House Distribution Systems New construction versus retrofit. Home owner’s media preference. Single zone versus multiple zones. Analog versus digital.

7 New Construction versus Retrofit New Construction – Rough-in and Trim-out stages. Retrofit – Cables are pulled and terminated throughout a finished structure.

9 Single-Zone System - All the speakers throughout the home receive the same programming.

10 Multi-Zone System – A whole house system in which different areas of the home can receive different programming.

11 Analog Versus Digital Distribution Analog System – Central amplifier powers outlying speakers. Audio is distributed to other rooms as an analog signal via speaker wire. Digital System – Central router sends digital signals to outlying amplifiers. Audio distributed as digital signals via CAT5e or CAT6 cables.

16 Audio Amplification and Distribution The audio must be amplified before being applied to a speaker. Distribution amplifiers provide a different amplifier for each pair of speakers. Some switching mechanism must be provided for selecting the audio source.

17 Remote Control Allows the end user to determine source of the audio, its volume, tone, etc. Remote Control Extender allows users in other rooms to control equipment as if they were in the room with the equipment.
