A little about me My name is Lori Kay Smith. In the past I have worked in the factories, as a home health aide, a certified nurse’s aide, and as a medication aide in a group home. I currently don’t work so that way I can spend all the time I need as a student. I still do research by going to the library and looking through reference books, books, and other materials.

My support and interests My support comes from my family, my friends, my church and my professional friends. I have two grown daughters who are both in college also. My oldest daughter is studying to be an emergency response preparer. My other daughter is going to school for forensic science. My interests include: doll making, cross stitch, making clothes, making quilts, making purses, making homemade candy, and cooking homemade foods.
5
My Crafts of counted cross stitch and pouting dolls.

School As a child I attended a public school. My mother and step-father were both in the army so we got to go over seas. During the late 70’s early 80’s we got stationed in central America in Panama. The animals we saw (that usually only see in the zoo), the riots, the different cultures, and the scenery was so vivid that I still remember it today. My sister was adopted from Panama while we were there.

Jobs in the Future The type of position I would like to hold is Patient Advocate or Peer Educator. Being a person who has lived with HIV for twenty years, I want to help newly diagnosed patients realize that the virus is not a death sentence.
9
Masters Degree My masters degree will help me get the job I want. It would also open the door for me to work with a drug company. These companies hire people to go all over the United States and educate people about HIV/AIDS, HIV medications, and other illnesses that people face (diabetes, high blood pressure, and weight issues).

Quote My grandmother always told me “idle hands do bad things.” I think this applies to school and my personal life. I’m always doing something to keep me busy. With school I always try to prepare ahead of time for discussions, assignments, or quizzes in case something comes up that I have to handle or deal with.

Finally my extra activities I do In 2009 I was part of the Ryan White Planning Council. I got to help decide where government grants were distributed throughout the HIV/AIDS community. I’m the current co-chair of the HIV People’s Caucus for my area. I get to host lunches and dinners that educate those infected and affected by the HIV/AIDS virus.
13
Extra Activities I’m part of HIV210 website committee. I help pass out information at health fares. I walk through the neighborhoods passing out information about helping to control the pet population. I give owners information about low cost vaccines, and spay and neuter clinics. On Sundays after church I pass out food boxes and letters of resources to help those that are less fortunate.
