Figures of Speech and Idioms “Self Esteem”- a person’s evaluation of their own worth To have low/high self esteem, to build self esteem “Children may grow to have low self esteem if you criticize them too much” (2) “In other words…” - clarifying a point “In other words, Western parents are concerned about their children’s psyches” “What I’m trying to say is, ” “What I mean to say is, …” “My point is that,…” (3) “gasp in horror” – a shock due to intense dislike or fear I gasped in horror when I saw the wedding dress was torn.

Also a song made popular by Young MC in 1989

Idioms, Slang and Pop Culture “An A minus is an Asian F” (cultural)- pertaining to the perception that an A minus grade received by an Asian American is similar to that of an “F” grade. “get into your business” – to interfere in someone else’s work or affairs Quit getting into my business! Concentrate on your own work! This problem is between my girlfriend and I, so don’t get into our business and let us settle it on our own. “bitten off more than (one) can chew” – trying to do more tasks than one has time or energy to do. Between work, school, family and her music, she bit off more than she could chew.
