Starter: look at the following images… 1.discuss why we’re still fascinated with Hitler 2.bullet point words / ideas that you associate with Hitler... 2:001:591:581:571:561:551:541:531:521:511:501:491:481:471:461:451:441:431:421:411:401:391:381:371:361:351:341:331:321:311:301:291:281:271:261:251:241:231:221:211:201:191:181:171:161:151:141:131:121:111:101:091:081:071:061:051:041:031:021:011:000:590:580:570:560:550:540:530:520:510:500:490:480:470:460:450:440:430:420:410:400:390:380:370:360:350:340:330:320:310:300:290:280:270:260:250:240:230:220:210:200:190:180:170:160:150:140:130:120:110:100:090:080:070:060:050:040:030:020:01End

The plan for today… explain the ideas of the Nazi Party in its early years assess the role of the SA in building Nazi support…

ADOLF HITLER: TRUE OR FALSE Born in Austria in 1889 he loved Austria he loved German lager and American cigarettes he wanted to become an artist but was rejected from Art School he was a vegetarian FALSE! He did not like Austria. FALSE! He didn’t drink or smoke

I’m going to be an artist a great soldier a dictator when I grow up…

Jan 1919 Anton Drexler sets up the German Workers’ Party or DAP (Nationalist; anti- ToV; anti-Weimar Government) Hitler attends his first DAP meeting. Sep 1919 Feb 1920 Hitler becomes Drexler’s deputy. Together they draw up the 25 Point Plan… The birth of the Nazi Party 1919-1921 Spring/Summer 1920 Hitler becomes an excellent speaker. He exploits people’s anger toward Ebert and the Government. DAP membership grows… Summer 1920 Hitler leads: (i) name change to National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP or Nazi Party for short); and (ii) adoption of swastika as party emblem. Mid-1921 Hitler pushes Drexler aside & becomes party leader

The 25 point plan was what the early DAP / Nazi Party stood for… 1. Read through and decide… -which policies are Nationalist (tradition; strong leader; strong Germany) -which are Socialist (share wealth more equally etc.) -which are Racist (some policies may be more than one thing) 2. Answer the Qs at the bottom of the sheet EXT: write some recruitment slogans that the Nazis might have used in the early 1920s Nazism = Nationalism + Socialism

The plan for today… explain the ideas of the Nazi Party in its early years assess the role of the SA in building Nazi support…

A Stormtrooper… from the Star Wars films…

Nazi “Stormtroopers” (Sturmabteilung or SA) Why did Hitler want his own army? Who do you think signed up (what types of men)? What do you think Hitler used them for? 2:001:591:581:571:561:551:541:531:521:511:501:491:481:471:461:451:441:431:421:411:401:391:381:371:361:351:341:331:321:311:301:291:281:271:261:251:241:231:221:211:201:191:181:171:161:151:141:131:121:111:101:091:081:071:061:051:041:031:021:011:000:590:580:570:560:550:540:530:520:510:500:490:480:470:460:450:440:430:420:410:400:390:380:370:360:350:340:330:320:310:300:290:280:270:260:250:240:230:220:210:200:190:180:170:160:150:140:130:120:110:100:090:080:070:060:050:040:030:020:01End

THE SA (STORMTROOPERS) The SA were the Nazis’ private Army – created in 1921 … recruited from ex-soldiers, unemployed and students… … provided security at Nazi meetings and bodyguards for Nazi leaders… … they broke up meetings of opposition groups… Germany was a democracy after WW1, with a national police force and national army (albeit only 100,000 men after ToV). How then did I get away with having my own private army?

FROM THIS SOURCE, WHAT DO YOU LEARN ABOUT THE SA (STORMTROOPERS)? The trouble began when my Stormtroopers attacked. Like wolves, they flung themselves in packs of 8 or 10 upon the enemy. After only 5 minutes I hardly saw one of them who was not covered in blood. The Hall looked like a bomb had hit it. Many of my supporters were injured. Others had to be driven away. But we had won the day.
