By 1914 By 1914, European nations had taken control of almost the entire continents of Africa and Asia. Through political or economic control, the power shifted entirely to the European nations and left the colonized regions weak and vulnerable. While there were some advantages for the imperialized nations, most felt attacked by the Europeans. The Europeans also looked on the non-Westerners as inferior and attempted to dominate them and “civilize” the conquered peoples. As this continued into the 20 th century, controlled regions would begin looking for leaders to help them fight for independence and national recognition.
30
Effects of Imperialism European nations (and America) profited from the colonies they controlled and developed international markets Native traditions declined and many peoples were forced to “civilize” by accepting European ways and religions Education was introduced in the new colonies and more became literate Lands were stripped in the colonies and the environment was polluted by the Empires Ideas of superiority and inferiority developed, making the Colonizers feel justified in their treatment of those they colonized
