2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 5 Thin Client Implementation Thin Client Implementation Information Technology (IT) reliance: growing in the workplace Increasing IT systems management challenges Increased Cyber Security and continual upgrades Enhances in meeting Executive Order 13423 energy and waste reduction goals
6
2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 6 Personal Computer v Thin Client
7
2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 7 Energy Savings Energy Savings Typical Desktop PC Workstation 200 – 300 watts (W) of electricity per computer SPR previously assigned ~800 PCs draws 160,000W – 240,000W Thin Client (TC) Workstation ~15 watts of electricity SPR current assignment ~600 TCs draws 12,000W Savings Realized: ~235W TC 188,000W / SPR 800 TC
8
2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 8 Functional Improvements Functional Improvements TCs transmit keystrokes and mouse clicks to a server
9
2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 9 Waste Reduction Waste Reduction Computer Hardware Replacement Parts and Services Once obsolete and replaced, SPR departments challenge keeping potentially hazardous scrap out of the landfill
10
2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 10 Benefits Benefits Thin Client Differences - Thin Client devices (supported by Citrix) Consume less energy Last longer than traditional PCs, and Have fewer parts to recycle or landfill Less complicated for telecommuting Cyber Security is enhanced SPR hot site enhancements (mobility for emergency or contingency operations)
11
2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 11 Continuity of Operations Continuity of Operations SPR is the U.S. insurance policy in the event of oil supply interruption from natural or man-made interruptions Texas is home to 26 refineries that account for one-fourth of U.S. refining capacity SPR Big Hill site is about 50 miles NE of Baytown, TX SPR Bryan Mound site is about 60 miles SSW of Baytown, TX

15
2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 15 During Hurricane Ike During Hurricane Ike Established as an Incident in WebEOC on September 8, 2008 OCC was able to monitor all site activities real-time Alternate EOC set up in LaGrange WebEOC updates are still possible –Team Members were able to keep status of all sites and all activities remotely from their hotel rooms

19
2009 OFEE Environmental Symposium East 19 SPR and CFL On-line registration of schools No transportation cost to the SPR The DOE/SPR and the M&O Contractor donated a total of 371 computer units to 23 local area schools The CFL program supported the rebuilding/reopening of the local area schools educational programs The Orleans Parish School Board provided the SPR an award thanking them for their donations as well as their overall support to the educational programs in the New Orleans area
