Location: Manu Biosphere Reserve, Peru 600hec reserve - Manu Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site, OR, local sites nearby Dates: Oct 30 th to Dec 1 st 2016 & Jan 9 th to Feb 10 th 2017. SLE 225 & SLE301. 24 places max per group. Fitness: Medium to high The Project: Activities will vary, but normally consist of the following; CISaustralia – Peruvian Rainforest Environmental Conservation Project Collect and monitor species and habitats found at the Manu Learning Centre Study endangered species such as the Blue Headed Macaw and the Jaguar (seasonal) Explore how humans impact on biodiversity and crucial conservation issues Track mammals via camera traps and forest transects Monitor and register trail biodiversity (jaguars, tapirs, deer, birds and monkeys) Process and upload data that is used by international conservation projects to determine wider conservation strategies Contribute to data that helps ensure these species remain protected and inform government decisions

Flights: STA booking forms. Group flights Visa / Passport: 90-183 day tourist visa. Valid Passport. Vaccination / Immunisations: YES! See your GP. Health Issues: Allergies, medication, health problems. Report to Deakin Safety: No drugs. No drinking on site or in accommodation. Airport Pick up: Yes. Internet: Yes but limited – you are vin the jungle. What to pack: Check Pre-departure Guide. July / August. Weather: Day – low 20’c. Night: 1’c. Health Insurance: Register with Deakin (complimentary/ compulsory) Accommodation: Eco sustainability lodge in shared room – or similar. 3 meals per day. Volunteering: Expect the unexpected. Not everything will be as you expected. Things will go wrong. You will be challenged. How will you respond? Culture: Soak it up. Things will be different, not ‘wrong’. Try new things, meet new people. History, politics, society. Ask questions, engage, contribute, take the time to talk with people, understand differences and similarities, build relationships Learn about yourself – your strengths and weaknesses. A great opportunity for your first conservation experience. Use as your base to benchmark.
