8 Union Jack In 1606 Scotland joined England and Wales. The Scottish flag- St. Andrew's Cross –was added to the English Flag- St. George's Cross. Later, in 1801 when Ireland was joined to the union, the Irish Flag - St. Patrick's Cross - was added. The Union Jack is also on the flags of Australia and New Zealand.

53 The Statue of Liberty was put up in New York Harbor in 1886. It was designed by Bartholdi, a French sculptor, who worked ten years at it. Then the statue was taken to pieces and shipped across the Atlantic as a gift from the French government to the United States.

54 The statue of Liberty is a woman who holds a torch up high. She symbolizes a welcome to a land of freedom.

56 The Statue is a present from France to the American people. It was presented on July 4th, 1884. It was designed by Frederic Bartholdi as a monument to a great hundred-year international friendship between America and France during the American revolutionary war. To transport it from France the Statue was taken to 350 pieces.

58 This tremendous work, which took fourteen years to complete, was finished in 1941. These gigantic heads are eighteen metres high. This memorial is often visited by the tourists who come to the USA.

59 P5: Famous American Presidents In South Dakota there is Mount Rushmore Memorial. You can see 4 granite faces of outstanding presidents of the USA. The 1 st is George Washington, the Commander-in – Chief of the American Colonial Army in the War of Independence. The 2 nd face is Thomas Jefferson’s, the 3 rd president who signed the Declaration of Independence. The 3 rd face is Abraham Lincoln, the 16 th president of the USA. His ideas about freedom for the black slaves were popular and in the war of the North and South negroes got freedom. The 4 th face is Theodore Roosevelt. The 26 th president of the USA who was one of the progressists. His reforms were against war politics and for nature guarding.
